The famed pairing of Nick Riley and Andi Durrant have produced one of the most varied and intriguing artist albums that we've seen so far this year...
:: Riley & Durrant - Research & Development :: New State Music
Tracklist 01. Introduction 02. Experiment No 1 03. Hollow (with Gina Dootson) 04. Aurora 05. Dead Of The Night (with Gina Dootson) 06. Interlude: Monday Blues 07. Tear Down The Walls (with Gina Dootson & Paul Maddox) 08. Experiment No 2 (with Hauswerks) 09. Rock School 10. My Enemy (with Ben Renwick) 11. Magnificent Love (with Gina Dootson) 12. Candesco
What Riley & Durrant have managed to create in this rather cunningly titled album will most likely surprise most people and their expectations of it. I myself wasn't ready for what these 12 tracks finally presented as my CDJ munched through them.
It makes sense though really - the pair are seasoned Radio presenters, they have promoted various nights in the UK, DJ'ed around the world and have produced and remixed numerous tracks.
No wonder then that this variety of talent and experience has been worked together to produce 12 varied tracks, which range from dirty house, deep techno, ambiance and of course, more trancey flavours. We see a lot of vocal work from Gina Dootson in the album, plus vocal aid from Ben Renwick and input from talents such as Paul Maddox and Hauswerks.
The album itself consists of an alarming intro full of carefully manipulated feedback, static hum and a bunch of synths. I do like these crafted intros as, when they're used effectively, they really can set the scene and they also make an album seem complete and polished off. 'Experiment No. 1' and 'Hollow' show strong electro influences, their cutting and well defined basslines being the most prominent elements. 'Aurora' is a much deep and cooler track, with a subtle but mesmerising feel thanks to a lovely harp, simple melodies and synth backing. 'Dead Of The Night' is where Gina Dootson can shine again in a very very minimal track where you can only really fixate on the deep bass and the clear vocals. Very enveloping stuff when you consider it's simple minimalism. 'Interlude: Monday Blues' is literally that - an ambient interlude. It's a wonderful, soothing sea of smooth sound and it's used really well to lead into 'Tear Down The Walls', which features Gina Dootson's vocal talents once again. The tranciest track so far, it has hints of prog and a touch of electro in there to keep a bit of consistency in the sound. 'Experiment No. 2' brings back the electro flavours with familiar basses and synths working to create some really cool grooves, but it also showcases some incredibly clean and crisp production, which makes it that much better. The final 4 tracks really pick things up - 'Rock School' powers out some fittingly raw and 'rocking' sounds, 'My Enemy' demonstrates the thick proggy element of the album, Gina Dootson makes her final appearance in 'Magnificent Love' with some vocal electric trance and 'Candesco' finally powers out this alvum with some much stronger, driving trancey hooks and grooves.
Conclusion:
Once you pass the initial wonderment at the general content of this album, you see the bigger picture and realise the scope that Riley & Durrant have covered. And covered successfully at that! This is a fantastically and masterfully varied album which has been mixed, blended and cut as to make it flow continuously whilst still keeping each track's individuality, topped off with great production efforts where no detail has been left unchecked.
