Something a little different to what you might listen to is the new album from G Corp who team up with the Mighty Tree for volume three of this series where they bring to you a fresh helping of dub reggae house.
The Dub style of music I have to say I'm a complete novice to. I remember a work friend bringing in an album by who I have forgot now but it was this style. It was then that I found out that G Corp once played alongside my friend’s band at a local venue. It’s a small world at times. They are originally from Birmingham and have played at many of the big venues in the city.
Let’s get on with the album then. G Corp has enlisted the aid of a group of musicians that go by the name of 'The Mighty Tree' for this album. This is the third in the series and for those into their reggae music with tints of house beats it could be one for you to have a nosey over.
1. DUB 2. Freedom Or Death (feat Flash) 3. Freedom Dub 4. Runnings (feat Messenger Douglas) 5. Runnings Dub 6. Freedom" (reprise) 7. The Avatar Of Cyber Bar 8. Love Of Jah" (feat JNR Sam) 9. Demon" (feat Ninety) 10. Space 11. Allmighty Flood" (feat Messenger Douglas) 12. Wish Youe Were Here" (feat Felix Bourgin) 13. People Dub" (feat Selwyn Brown) 14. Perilous Time" (feat Messenger Douglas & Juggla) 15. Freedom" (reprise 2)
On first glance over this album the pace is very down tempo and has a chilled out vibe to it but then you tend to associate reggae with relaxed and chill out moods. The rhythms that are flowing out of the first track with is a dub track with a vocal sample popping in, lots of symbol slides and traditional instruments used not only in the first track but the whole album.
The Harmonica is used in quite a few of the tracks in this album to create some very funky and laid back rhythms. I don’t think there is not a reggae style of album that doesn’t use that sound to create that Jamaican atmosphere within its music though but don’t quote me on that. The bass created throughout the album is deep and fulfilling with a good rhythm to it. That’s what this album is all about, really good rhythms and laid back vocals over the dub tinted beats. Violin riffs are in there two and feature on a few tracks.
One good thing that I found particular useful on this album is the cookbook that comes with it. Yes, a cookbook! It's full of recipes for traditional reggae style dishes and no doubt a fine addition to your other cook books you might own. I have tried a few of the recipes in there and I can say they are rather tasty although don’t drink too much of the Guinness punch then try to cook one of the other fine dishes in the book, it ends in disaster.
While each track has the same style and feel about it I would say the highlight in there is a track called 'Demon'. I'm not sure why but its one that jumped out at me more than the others. The catchy vocal that is put over the bass groove is really good and in a reggae when a little funky.
Conclusion:
I don’t really have a great knowledge on reggae dub or this style of dance music but I really did enjoy this album. Its something different to put on while your cooking that’s for sure and the addition of a cook book with some really tasty recipes in gives you something to do while you have it on. If you’re a fan of this style then buy it! If your new to this style then try it, you may well be pleasantly surprised.
