[i:Vibes] features an interview with the company director of the record label who offer their productions on MP3 before officially released, On which we recently featured an article
The Bhaskar Dandona Interview:
Bhasker, Thanks for agreeing to do this interview with [i:Vibes] As we already know, you have your own record label 'Redemption', are you also a Producer and DJ?
Just a DJ, no production. I made the decision a few years ago that making music had to be treated with respect, either it is your career or leave it alone, music is not a realm for half hearted commitment
Have you had any productions or done any remixes in the past before you made your commitment to Redemption?
One remix of C Sharp that I did with David Craig (who has had stuff out on eve) it was the first ever release and a little way of just saying hello to everyone really
Whats your all time favourite record?
Nightwriters "Let The Music Use You" Frankie Knuckles 92 Hardcore Remix - the biggest rave song ever made jointly tied with XVX I and II the best underground trance songs ever made!!
and your favourite record at the moment?
fav at the moment is Ascent by Matriarch both mixes
So how long have you DJ'ing for?
Since december 4th 1990
Thats quite a long time, how did you get into it originally?
I always liked instrumental music when I was an early teen, but when acid house came along in 88 that was it, i bought records all the time and the night that sealed my fate was the first ever rave I wqent to in Birmingham in Autumn 1989, I have not looked back since really
So have you had a successfull Career as a DJ?
From there I did all the school parties around various small venues in the midlands they were alot of fun, very drunk teenagers running around to chart music and all the underground stuff I was buying, from there I went to university and we ran a massive night for four years that got known across the whole of central scotland, by the time I left university I was playing alongside people like dave clark, mrs woods, Blu Peter and loads of other guys all over glasgow and edinburgh
I had to leave scotland and things slowed down but I wasn't having any of it so we started redemption in June 99 and off it went
How did the idea for starting a Record Label originate?
I worked a label in scotland for a while and have obviously been collecting for a very long time and I just wanted to gather all my ideas under one roof, the thing I really knew was that certain tunes whether they become famous or not have a certain magic about them if you will, they light up the room and the crowd at the same time and I just wanted to put out a stream of records like that so other people who felt the same might start to identify with what we were attempting to do
The second impt thing I wanted to achieve was consistencey, i wanted pure quality and I think we have achieved that
Did you encounter any problems when initially setting up your own label?
Many, many. At first I was in a full time job so I would have to race home in my lunch hour to organise the pressing plants, promotion, graphic design etc etc, when I got home at nights I would be straight at my desk to carry on, hard times, but to be honest the hardest thing has been to get people to listen to the music, the market is over saturated with product but most of it is pure crap. However the problem is that when you are new no one wants to pay attention to you even if you have an ass kicking song to release. The other hard thing is to find the right dj's
How many other people are involved with your record label?
Theres me, I'm the boss, then Colin McNeil who is the inhouse full time producer, his tracks make up the ritual label and neptune express label, the theres adam Mckeown and Neal Lines who are my head of sales pa respectively and finally the contracted artists, Toxen, Microbe, Owen B, Joe Kelly and Yelmo
How would you classify the type of music that Redemption releases?
underground hands in the air trance
What you do, offering MP3's before release is something I have never seen before. What inspired that?
I belive the internet is a very positive force and an effective way of marketing, giviving away the tunes even before release says something about our commitment to the net as a tool for communication and our commitment to our customers, if we can spread an mp3 across 5 continents it's like it having been played on the radio loads of times, at then end of the day anyone can record a song of the radio if they want a free copy, I guess we are cutting out the middle man, there is more to it that that though as all the artists concerned have agreed too
It really demonstrates the passion all at redemption have for good music, commercial gain is great but it shouldn't overshadow good underground music and attitude
Have you got any new upcoming releases we should look out for?
we are currently promoting four new tracks and a couple of others are released at the end of this month Bhaskar : owen b "out there" and Yelmo "Rocking it" (on the detonator label) have there official release at the end of february. But on promo is Joe Kelly "What's Heppening", Freezinbg Remixes by Owen B and Mind One, Microbe's new single "The Anser" and Toxens new single "Gloria"
How do you see the future for Redemption?
To be honest i have my eye on the top forty across europe, the nightmare walking single was very very close to getting signed by Ministry and others were interested too but we just missed out, I am gonna keep working till I launch one of these acts into superstardom
I noticed there is a certain consistancy with the records which you sell from your site. Can you tell me a little more about it?
I have tried to do something different with it in that I reflect my taste as a dj as opposed to stocking everything, people have really taken to the idea because I believe they can hear the consistencey between all the tracks featured, no fillers just killers.
[i:Vibes] thanks Bhaskar Dandona for taking the time to speak to us and we wish him the best of luck with Redemption for the future.
