He might not be DJ Mag's number One DJ anymore but he is without doubt of of the most important artists within dance music. His latest single release is a track taken from his recent 'In Between' album with remixes from Alex Kunnari and TV Rock.
Paul van Dyk is very much one of the big name DJ's on the dance music scene. He's been DJ Mags number one DJ for the past two years and sold millions of records. His latest single is a track taken from his 'In between' album released earlier this year. I liked the album although I've read other sources that slate it to high heaven. SO long as its good top your ear who cares what others say. There are plenty of mixes to have a look at with this release, which ones are the pick of the bunch.
:: Radio Edit :: Vandit Club Mix :: PvD Club Mix :: PvD Club Mix Instrumental :: TV Rock Remix :: Alex Kunnari Remix
The Radio Edit is the same single that featured on his album. The track features the vocals of Rea Garvey who is a singer from rock group called Reamonn. The track is a break beat style up lifter with a vocal hook and a piano style melody. It was without doubt one of the catchiest tracks on the album thanks to that melody that swirls in the distance behind the vocals and the break beat. I don’t see this track getting many radio plays, not in the UK anyway as most stations don’t play dance music unless it’s a dedicated show. if they do its you pop commercial stuff mostly. A shame as this track is pretty good and would be a welcome sign along when taking a shower.
Onto the mixes now and if your a listener to Paul's radio shows and livesets you would have heard a few of these pop up from time to time. The Vandit Mix is by far the meatier of the bunch with a deep beat, building melody and an alectro sounding build riff that sounds familiar to the ear. The vocal is there with the mix as is a nicely worked break with the melody before the electro riff kicks back in. Pumping up the BPM even more is the PvD Club Mix which has been made for those club sets in mind. A banging beat, slamming kick and a deep bass groove building the track up before a break where the vocal slides in over a background whooshing build. The drum rolls and the pumping beat continue. Good slamming club music this from mr Dyk. The is just the club mix without the vocals in for those dub lovers.
Two remixes on this release to have a look at which are more on the housey side than banging trance. The TV Rock Remix reminded me of a cross between an old Sash record featuring a DJ Belissima riff with the sound it has. It offers guitar strings with a steady house beat and influxes of deep electric grooves. The Alex Kunnari Remix is a little more on the tech side. It builds with deep electric riffs and steady percussion mix with a breakdown in the middle that puts a different tone on the melody using the vocals over the top. It then slides into a beat and punchy electric riff building the background sounds up. Two decent remixes here but neither really grabs you by the balls and makes your hair stand on end.
Conclusion:
This is a good release for Paul and a nice record to choose from his album to release. The PvD and Vandit mixes will be the ones rattling the club speakers but expect some to take the TV Rock and Alex Kunnari mixes for something a little different to the pumping trance mixes. For that short burst of pleasure, dabble with the radio edit.
