Tiesto returns his ISOS series to the White Isle of Ibiza. This compilation is said to reflect not only Ibiza's well known party vibe, but also the hidden beauties of the secret, stashed away spots of the island. Tiesto himself said that this album was mixed "the old fashioned way" meaning no use of computers, gadgets or software - which if true, is quite an admirable element in today's musical climate.
The album itself kicks off with calm, chilled beats, providing more of an atmospheric feel than anything else. Distinct moods can be picked up on as CD1 progresses. The sounds take on a deep, concentrated vein before morphing into something that would have dancefloors and beach parties shaking and grooving. Towards the end of the first disc, the feel deepens again, but the tracks also become more vocal, ending on a sublime vocal piece by Imogen Heap: 'Hide & Seek'.
CD2 sees a tougher edge to the tracks and more uptempo beats. There's a definite electro tinge here too, as we see tracks delivering clear, clapping beats and distinct, grinding basses. It's hard to describe, but a lot of the included tracks seem to contain a real air of atmosphere. None of them just 'go through the motions', but they do seem to have been specially selected partially due to their underlying production qualities. As CD2 approaches its final stages, the tracks toughen up a lot more, exhibiting much more in the way of body and strength. An Ibiza album wouldn't be right though without a chilled end, and that's exactly what we get with a lovely, totally chilled out acoustic piece at the end with D’Alt Vila - Breathing.
Conclusion:
A good selection of tunes, solid 'old fashioned' [ahem, proper!] mixing and the ISOS brand makes this a great piece of listening. I was in Ibiza this summer and it certainly brings back some moments for me.
