After having released a couple of techy numbers earlier in the year on the Jinx imprint, Nick Larson has 2 more stompers, this time on 2 Play...
:: Nick Larson - What Else / Barock :: 2 Play :: 2PLAY025
1) What Else 'What Else' is an electro tinged piece of tech. It is mildly paced at 132BPM but carries a lively rhythm due to the bass which rolls off the kick drum and the active, alert percussion. There is a synth element which could almost be described as ambient - the airy, distant sounds add a ghostly feel to the whole thing, sometimes reminding you of more dark, minimal tunes. A bit of a mash up genres here, quite a curious crossover track.
2) Barock 'Barock' is very different. You're back up to a brisk 137BPM, and introduced by a lengthy passage of percussion with a tribal flavour. This intro is haunted by menacing, sustained synths which are reminiscent of Katana. When the beat finally drops in, it dominates the track. The kicks absolutely bang out and the associated bass hits boom along in the background. Subtle filters and an extremely subtle change in bass note during phrase breaks are an awesome touch which keep the track alive. The shrill, daunting synths and a wild snare roll take over during the breakdown but unleash back into the banging, storming blizzard of beats and intense percussion that make up the bulk of this wild production.
I do enjoy a decent bit of techno, and that's exactly what this is. A surprise track for the 2Play label I think. The louder the better!

Conclusion:
2 Play demonstrates both consistency and variety whilst Nick Larson is affirming his stance as a producer to watch out for. Two quite distinct pieces here, the slower, electro beats of 'What Else' or the quicker, tougher sounds of 'Barock' are both pieces to enjoy.
