Gareth Emery's podcast launched back in March 2006 and runs every fortnight, where Gareth picks a favourite selection of the current new and upfront music. The diverse blend of house, electro, prog, tech and of course, trance allowed the podcast to build up quite a following and it eventually made it into the Worldwide Top 20 Featured Podcasts on the iTunes platform.
When it comes down to the music, CD1 delivers a house and electro oriented set. Plenty of funky feeling and groovy sounds with some tougher electro in there. Perhaps a bit of a cheesey feeling now and again, but it's easy to confuse cheesey with what can simply be described as 'light hearted' music. Thrown in as the penultimate track though is 'YearZero' by Andy Moor and Orkidea. Not a bad track at all but it just seems to be heavily out of place as it's overly trancey and doesn't fit with the general vibe of the first CD.
CD2 is filled with trance and 'electro-tech' sounds and I can easily see this as being the most favoured CD of the two by a long way. It's filled with massive tracks like Albert Vorne - Formentera What, the much hyped 'Another You, Another Me' by Lange and Emery himself, DNS - Invisible Touch and not forgetting the immeasurably massive Rafael Frost remix of Alex M.O.R.P.H. & Rank1's simply huge tune 'Life Less Ordinary'. Pretty much solid all the way through, this CD doesn't lose its way at all throughout the mix. There is decent pace and energy and the tracks do represent a fine selection of what 2007 has had to offer in terms of trance.
Conclusion:
Love it or hate it you can't help but be slightly impressed at how this particular podcast has made itself known. This 2 CD mix is a true reflection of what you can expect every 2 weeks so other than another marketing tool, it does also serve as a nice and varied compilation album.
