Here's a double combination with an Askew remix of a O'Callaghan track and a O'Callaghan remix of an Askew track. Classic Askew and the usual pumping stuff from John O'Callaghan with this latest release on Discover.
This is a nice welcome release for those who like the style that John Askew and John O'Callaghan offer. A remix of each others tracks not yet available in full length glory. John Askew is very much the John Smiths when it comes to dance music. No nonsense just cleaver intelligent pounding tracks. John O'Callaghan seems to create excellent main hooks in his tracks and his good form continues with his remix here.
:: John O Callagahan - Low Resolution Fox (John Askew Remix) :: John Askew - How Can I Put This? (John O'Callaghan Remix)
A track by John remixed by a guy called John, its a good job they have different second names otherwise it could get a little confusing. The O'Callaghan Remix of Askew's 'How Can I Put This' is a very tidy banging trance affair with an uplifting string driven melody that builds its way up in the track then explodes after a neat little breakdown. The beat is Sharpe and the kick on that boots off the main beat goes very nicely. Those Askew style backing sounds are all in there with its neat padded bass line flowing along giving the mix pace. The main hook in here is the string driven melody O'Callaghan feeds in with a main break and lets rip in full flow with the main beats and kicks giving an uplifting upfront record you should find in most play lists of this kind of style. No vocals just pure electronic kicks and beats offering the main attraction with this one.
The Askew Remix of John O'Callaghan's 'Low Resolution Fox' record is classic Askew. It reminded me of some of his earlier productions. Simple in production with that trademark Askew beat and a deep driven bass line with soft kicks and pads layered on the top. A simple riff kicks in at the start of the track that leads into the first break when the beat drops out. The sounds all disappear with the riff faded away and it pumps a stringy echo of sounds that is the main melody. It’s Hands in the air kind of breakdown with flowing background changes and fluttering of string driven melody on top. It's simple and no messing around and makes you wonder if John went back in time to some of his early tracks and drew inspiration from those to create this remix. Simple beats, catchy strings and a nice breakdown that does the rounds a second time just when you think the track will just play out. Solid track.
Conclusion:
You have got a good couple of club records here with I feel the O'Callaghan remix being the stronger for the uplifting fanatic and the Askew mix being for more the simple progressive style fan. Definitely get the O'Callaghan mix here as it is a little gem. The Askew mix is good but nothing mind blowing. That said, good work and a fine release for Discover.
