© Evbointhi:Vibes posed some questions to Evbointh – rising star and Poland’s answer to melodic trance...

Every so often you hear a track that just sticks to your heart. 17 year old Krzysztof Michalak aka Evbointh did this end of 2006 with the track ‘One Wish’. It was played on the legendary Trance Around The World show and soon after gobbled up by Above & Beyond for their label Anjunabeats. The track got such remarkable feedback that a remix was added from Anjunabeats legend in the making Daniel Kandi. ‘One Wish’ was also added to the Anjunabeats Volume 5 compilation which was released last year. This young lad has some amazing potential and it will be interesting to see what follow ups come along. At the age of 17, he doesn’t really have a discography yet, but that can still happen in the future. i:Vibes had a nice chat with the polish youngster…

i:Vibes: Hi Krzysztof, how are you? Thanks for taking some time to talk to us. Where exactly in Poland are you from and how and why did you get started with trance?

Evbointh: The pleasure is mine. I’m very well, thanks. Trance music in my life appeared many years ago (it was 2001 / 2002 if I remember correctly). Earlier my taste wasn’t as precisely guided as it is now. I was listening to practically everything that was calling at the emotions in my soul. Today, even though I love Trance, I’m really open to many kinds of music. I enjoy listening to rock tracks from my friends. Probably because they are recorded by me. :) I hope they’ll be famous in the near future in Poland (and out of Poland also. :) It is safe to say that I’m a big fan of well performed music.

i:Vibes: What was your early childhood like? What was the turning point that made you want to get into making music?

Evbointh: I don’t think my early childhood was distinguished by anything special. I was a normal young man who was taking advantage of life, but the sensitivity to sounds was and is one of my features for today. Everything started when I began play on the keyboard which stood in my home since I can remember. I played everything that I heard on radio and TV. I was composing awkwardly also. :) I was listening to various kinds of music. Ranging from pop to techno (then I had no knowledge about genres of music). Everything is thanks to my brother. Why? He was as interested in music as I am now. Thanks to him I had a good access to the new, fresh music. My attitude to music changed when I got my first true sequencer – that was a demo of ‘Fruity Loops’.

i:Vibes: Who are your musical influences?

Evbointh: There are a lot of producers whose work arouses respect. In the first instance I think here about Andre Tanneberger, famous from ATB. His album ‘Movin’ Melodies’ was the first which I had in my audio library. He’s one of a kind. I also can’t leave out here about Above & Beyond. Undoubtedly their tracks are full of emotions and are undeniably timeless.

i:Vibes: You probably still go to school. Will you go to University? What kind of job would you like to have in life, if music does not work out?

Evbointh: Yes, I’m still going to school and I still have more than one year until I finish it. I’m planning to study Realization of Music. I’ve heard a lot about London’s SAE Technology Institute. We’ll see how it's gonna be… :) Today I’m sure I want to work with music. Maybe it is a bit irresponsible, but I haven’t thought about anything else for several years. Hope I won’t be disappointed! :)

i:Vibes: Is there any kind of trance scene in Poland? Have you seen any big DJs in clubs in Poland?

Evbointh: The Trance-scene in Poland exists, but only in the western parts (trance events, etc.). In the east where I live there aren’t any big events. There aren’t too many occasions to see big DJ’s / stars of the trance scene, except on satellite TV. In spite of all of this I hope in the next few years something will change. Who knows…? Maybe something will change because of the influences of my friends and I.

i:Vibes: I love the track ‘One Wish’. What is this track about and what inspired you to produce it?

Evbointh: Glad you like it! To tell the truth ‘One Wish’ was been created very spontaneously. It’s a naked truth! The general outline came into being in only one day - it’s hard to speak of what inspired me the most.

i:Vibes: You were 15 when you made the track. Please explain to me, how it can be possible to make such a beautiful piece of music at such a young and tender age?

Evbointh: I have to tell you that it was an unusual feeling, particularly in the view that Anjunabeats is one of the best trance labels in the world. It feels great to be an element of Anjuna’s publishing history. The most splendid thing for me are the listeners - not only trance-listeners came to love this track! :) That’s what satisfies me the most. I live with the belief that everything is possible, especially today.

i:Vibes: Was ‘One Wish’ difficult to produce? Please explain how you produced this track and if you have a certain way you go about producing a track?

Evbointh: First was a padline and then a melody riff. This riff arose from a virtuosic improvisation. ;) As I said before the work on ‘One Wish’ proceeded very quickly. I found the work on this track was very rewarding and it gave me a lot of satisfaction because the track sounded fresh - it was my first track with that combination of sounds. I’m sure the sound’s freshness and desire to create something special gave me a lot of inspiration.

i:Vibes: Anjunabeats signed ‘One Wish’. How excited were you about this and do you remember where you were when you got the call that it had been signed?

Evbointh: It was a normal day. I was tired after a day at school. In the evening I opened my e-mail account and there was the information. Then I went to sleep… ;)

i:Vibes: You also have two other tracks, ‘Sonar’ and ‘Sempre Triste’ (‘Always Sad’), tell us a bit about these tracks and when they will be released.

Evbointh: Yes, these tracks are only… I don’t know what I can say about them, actually. Not too much, unfortunately :( I don’t have any publishing plans regarding them, to be frank.

i:Vibes: What other secrets can you tell us about future releases and wishes?

Evbointh: There are a few things but… let’s not talk about it or we’ll jinx it :) On my MySpace you will find more information soon.

i:Vibes: If you could produce a track with anyone, who would you want to do it with?

Evbointh: It’s hard to give a clear answer, because there are lots of great producers. As a matter of fact I think about Jaytech, Wippenberg, Boom Jinx, Ozgur Can or David West. I love their tracks for the innovation, individuality and characteristic style, and incredible sound. Their tracks are technically perfect (in my opinion) and this is most important for me currently.

i:Vibes: Do you have your own studio? What equipment do you use and what piece of equipment other than your pc could you not live without?

Evbointh: Yes, I have my own studio but the word ‘studio’ is extremely abusing the word. To produce I use a computer, of course (nowadays it’s an unquestionable standard). It might sound trivial, but I couldn’t manage without my notes. I write down my reflections very often. Besides my keyboard, which is my main element of my ‘studio’, there isn’t anything else.

i:Vibes: When you produce a track, what is the most important thing a track needs to have to satisfy you?

Evbointh: Currently, it’s the sound of a track and its performance and realization. I have the intention of doing melodious tracks, but first I want to work out my technique.

i:Vibes: You are also a DJ. What is the most important thing for you as a DJ? When I look at the tracklist from your TATW Guestmix below, it doesn’t present itself as a melodic set, but more progressive. Is that your style or do you like to mix it up with all kinds of styles?

Evbointh TATW Guest Mix
1) Dogzilla - Frozen (Wippenberg Remix)
2) Jaytech - Floor Sequence (Original Mix)
3) David West Feat. Inkfish - Searching For Substance (Boom Jinx Remix)
4) Blue Foundation - Sweep (16-Bit Lolitas Vox)
5) ID - ID [CD-R]
6) Riley & Durrant Feat. Gina Dootson - Hollow (Houseworks Club Mix)
7) Evbointh - One Wish (Daniel Kandi & Mark Andréz Remix)

Evbointh: Yes, I am. I’m really a novice DJ. What’s the most important for me? When I’m playing I focus on creation a mixture of different music styles within EDM. I also focus on fast, harmonic and baffling transitions.

i:Vibes: If you were to get a one hour DJ learning session, from what DJ would you want to get instruction and why?

Evbointh: At the last Creamfields (07/07/07) (by the way that was my first event – great date for something so special! :) ) in Poland, of course, I had the opportunity to listen to how excellent a DJ Ronski Speed is. I had the impression that his set was perfect (track selection, transitions etc.). I think I could learn a lot from him!

i:Vibes: Where do you see yourself in three years?

Evbointh: Education in spite of all. Who knows...? Maybe out of Poland? As I said before I’m planning to study Realization of Music. I also think about playing in clubs.

i:Vibes: What are your current favourite five tracks?

Evbointh: Hybrid - Finished Symphony (Boom Jinx Remix)
Koop - Tonight
Mercury Rev - Black Forest (Lorelei)
Michael Cassette - Shadows Movement
DT8 Project - Destination (Above & Beyond Remix)

i:Vibes: What are your five all time favourite tracks?

Evbointh: Ferry Corsten - Sublime (Thrillseekers Remix)
Kyau Vs. Albert Feat. Julie - Not With You (Ronski Speed Vocal Mix)
Mike Shiver & Elevation Feat. Carrie Skipper - Hurricane (Mike Shiver Mix)
Cassandra Fox - Touch Me (Mike Koglin Vs. Jono Grant Remix)
ATB – Summer Rain (132BPM Edit)

i:Vibes: What are your hobbies?

Evbointh: I love cycling. Summer, bike, forest, dust, mud. This is my second passion. :) Besides that, I love meeting with my friends to talk and laugh. :)

i:Vibes: If you had only one last track to play in a set what would you play?

Evbointh: It would be: Cassandra Fox - Touch Me (Mike Koglin Vs. Jono Grant Remix)

i:Vibes: Thanks Krzysztof for the chat and good luck for the future. I can’t wait to hear more tracks from you!!!

Evbointh: I have a lot of wishes, so… :) Big thanks for the interview.
