Ronski Speed makes an appearance on the quality Reset Records label with something a bit different to his usual style. Maarten de Jong is on the remix, check it out...
:: Ronski Speed Pres. RST - Stormbound :: Reset Records :: RS032
1) Stormbound (Ronski Speed Dub Tech Mix) There's a slight essence of a tribal feel as this one begins, however this is soon swallowed up by a big, griity bassline combined with a pretty punchy kick. The track builds to something strong very quickly as synths pluck a simple rhythm over and over and a meatier bass kicks in after a huuuge snare roll. Eventually you see how things pan out as the synths evolve into a melody during the breakdown. The melody itself and the sounds of the synth carries a dark and sinister feeling - reminds me a lot of DJ Choose & F's quite unmistakable style. The synth presence is beefed up as a secondary, lighter melody joins in and the result is very enjoyable indeed. Just the right combination of drive and melody make this an irresistible piece of tech trance.
2) Stormbound (Maaten de Jong Edit) Maarten de Jong's take on 'Stormbound' has much less pace. The soft beats, rhythmic percussion and blippy, highly defined sfx tell the story that this will be a much deeper piece of minimal tech. To accompany the blips and snares, a classic stabbed synth is used. It does work, but kind of dries the production out a bit after a while. The sinister melody from the original makes an appearance during the breakdown where things seem to get a hint more trancey, but this doesn't last for long as the minimal beats and blips and that synth return to push the track out to it's end.
Conclusion:
Something different from Ronski Speed indeed - and I like it! His Original Dub Tech Mix is definitely my preferred version due to it's excellent tech-trance nature. People looking for something a bit slower and more minimal should check out Maarten de Jong's remix before passing this one by.
