The second in the artistic 'Lust' compilation series see's Joey Negro pick his favourite records in a double house compilation with two sides to the coin.
House music has always had a bit of a reputation for being a bit sexy, look at Roger Sanzhez facial hair styling for proof of that. It's such a big genre with so many crossovers and variations in style. The soothing grooves have been used to set the mood for many bedroom shenanigans all over the world for years. The 'Lust' compilations series looks at bringing sexy music combined with artwork fit to be in the upper classes drawing rooms.
The artwork for the series is done by Jonas Larsson whose erotic images litter the compilation covers and inserts. I'm told it’s all about fusing the sexy nature of house grooves with the curves and sexual power of the female form. The erotic nature is all very tasteful so don’t expect those over exiting of you to be beating one off to the front cover in your local record store. It's not that kind of erotic.
It's all about posh in a word and thinking back to those seedy clubs with 'Make A Move' blaring out and my shoes sticking to the floor I wonder why Joey Negro got approached to produce volume two.
It's simple; Dave Lee has been producing for years with Joey Negro being one of his many aliases. A few of his other more popular ones would be Jakatta and Raven Maize. He has been producing for twenty years and his records have taken on many different forms in that time. He has never gone away from House music and that’s a good thing. With this compilation he has put together two discs of very fine house music. The first disc is one solid sexy house trip where as the second develops into a more down tempo affair.
Disc One
1. Robert Strauss ft Saidah Baba Talibah - Close Our Eyes (Joey Negro Edit) 2. Atmosfear - Motivation (Dimitri From Paris Mix) 3. Plantlife - Luv Me (Till It Hurts) (RSL Mix) 4. 1. Leroy Hutson - Love The Feeling 2. 4 Hero - Our Own Place 3. Ron Dante & Peter Link - Mighty Gents 4. Nova Fronteira - Vox Humana 5. Peter Jaques Band - It Feels Mighty Fine 6. Leroy Burgess - Midnight In The Streets 7. Joey Negro Presents The Sunburst Band - We Can Live Forever 8. Heaven 'N' Hell Orchestra - Whatcha Gonna Do 9. Chic - Happy Man 10. Cloud Nine - Luvbug 11. Domu Presents Pete Simpson - Play This Song 12. The Rebirth - Love Issue 13. Joey Negro Presents The Sunburst Band - Love Trouble (Remix) 14. Valentine Brothers - Let Me Be Close To You 15. Blue Six - Very Good Friends 16. Heatwave - The Star Of A Story 17. Clara Hill - Once I Know 18. Marden Hill - Bardot 19. Alessi Brothers - Oh Lori
Joey Negro does deliver with this compilation a fine selection of soothing grooves filled with funk, jazz and traditional house melodies. Especially so on the first disc where its a solid house groove from start to end. It's not just a mix of tracks asd you can finds plenty of Edits and chops in here so each record slides smoothly into the next.
For a lot of mainstream Joey Negro fans who would have only heard a few of his records mainly featured on cheesy house compilations they may be surprised by this to find the Negro name mixing smooth grooving house like this. No surprise to those who know Dave Lee's taste for house music. There are lots of funky grooves to be found on the first disc here with the odd tinting of piano, my favourite sound when listening to house records in there.
The second disc kicks it down a gear with more funk and jazz elements combined with female vocal style arrangements to create a more relaxed pace about it. You could say this is the chill out blend of sexy laid back house. There are some excellent grooves and strings to be found in here and its a great little mix to slip on while undertaking a spot of reading or engaging in a little lustful activity.
For me this is a welcome change to what I usually listen to and although its packaged up to be a connection between sex and house I found it more than does the job when you’re doing the ironing.
Conclusion:
Overall this is a good album. I've not heard the first in this series of compilations but their aim is to bring sexy music with soul to your front room. The first disc would be the one I'd be banging on for a second time around as it's got a few records in there that caught my ear more than the second more chilled out disc.
