Radio 1 DJ Grooverider has been sent to prison for four years having been caught with cannabis on a trip to Dubai last November. Someone get him the soap on a rope...
It was last November, when Grooveride (real name Raymond Bingham) arrived at Dubai airport in preparation for a sold out club night at one of the city's local hotspots. Instead of hitting the duty free he was arrested and caught with 2.16 grams of cannabis in his pocket. It's been four months since that day but things are not looking too good right now for the Radio 1 DJ.
He had his hearing for the offence recently and has been sentenced to four years in prison for possession of the drug. The sentence is the minimum for that kind of drug offence in the United Arab Emirates with the region having a very tough stance on drugs, no matter what class other regions put them in. His lawyers had tried to argue he did not know the laws and Grooverider himself admitted he forgot he had the drugs in his pockets.
Drugs are drugs at the end of the day and you can have no compassion for anyone, even if they are a popular Drum & Bass DJ who wonders into an International airport with cannabis in their pocket. He has been struck off his Radio 1 show since the incident last November and it looks like for the next few years he will be avoiding dropping his soap in the shower.
