1) Follow Up
This second release on the new Monster Deep label kicks off with 'Follow Up'. it's billed as a cross between electro and trance, which may make some of you raise your eyebrows but let's push genre classifications to the side and focus on the music at hand.
The first thing to notice here is the crisp production - snappy beats and clicky, blippy percussion. 2 minutes into the track it begins to demonstrate what it's all about as a big fat electro bassline erupts from the depths. This isn't all just a mindless sawtooth bass-a-thon though, as slowly a melodic essence with a tinge of rises up thanks to some subtle uses of a blend of pads and delicate synths. In fact, by the time the breakdown is in full swing (and it kind of comes around without you realizing) the mood has totally changed and really is quite pleasant. The track kicks off again by re-introducing the bassline and this allows the track to play out solidly, both melodically and rhythmically, to the end.
Taste
With 'Taste', again we're seeing some electro influences but the main streak here is more progressive than anything else. The first few passages see bobbling beats and really easy going layers of pads laced with dancing melodic synths. Again a rough bassline is used to change the pace and feel of the track. However this one still remains quite subdued so as not to overpower its progressive nature. The general sound is that of a toned down current Wippenberg style. The breakdown hits all the right notes as far as atmospherics go - the soundscape is beautiful and very well crafted. Another well thought out balance between the gentle prog sounds and more gritty electro basses.
Conclusion:
Promising material for both Anhken and Monster Tunes' new label, Monster Deep. The whole genre crossing thing could prove quite interesting...
