A Five AM release from the tail end of 2007, still making waves into 2008...
:: Mike Koglin & Marc Vedo - Dirty Monster :: Five AM :: FAM073
1) Dirty Monster (Original Mix) Whilst a track may have been out for a while we certainly mustn't start to think its defunct. Here's one I rediscovered recently, Mike Koglin & Marc Vedo's 'Dirty Monster'. The original is a typical Five AM, fat and chunky track. A broad kick and percussive base are a solid platform for the bass hits and stabbing old-skool style lead. The gritty sounds, stabbed leads and various sfx lean this one on a techy tip although there is a trancey section in the breakdown which contrasts nicely and breaks things up evenly. On the whole though, the basis of this one is simply a tough, techy number which drives you easily from start to finish, earning it's name with relative ease.
2) Dirty Monster (Richard Durand Remix) Richard Durand provides the remix for this one, so you know it's headed in a techy direction. There seems to be a big division between the people who love his style and those who don't really get on with the major, teched up style he pushes out. I find myself distinctly pulled towards this style though and this track is no exception. The reason in this case isn't apparent until 2 minutes into the track, whereupon a gently crafted rhythmic stab and fat, overwhelming and rolling bass drops in. It's just such a fat and compelling sound I could listen to it for hours! Even through these big sounds and techy leads, you can still identify the trancey connections within the production and this is another reason why I find it so compelling. Banging, solid stuff from Mr. Durand!

Conclusion:
A good original track but this release is strengthened greatly by the top drawer remix from Richard Durand. Pretty much a grade A example of where tech trance should be.
