The most recent release on Octavius, the still-fresh tough and techy label from Paul Moelands, is from Orjan Nilsen. Maarten Hercules puts in a deeper remix...

:: Orjan Nilsen - Black Mamba / Down & Dirty
:: Octavius
:: OCTV003

1) Black Mamba (Original Mix)

'Black Mamba' is hot right off the mark. It is propelled by an enthusiastic thundering beat, nippy percussion and a distinctive bass synth which stabs out a simple yet mean rhythm. The real energy behind this piece comes into play after the first breakdown though. A sinister synth is introduced and stabs out a jittering hook/melody. Combined with the growling, thundering beat a real force is created and the track gains a really dark and driving edge, perfect for excellent tech trance. There is a nice and calming breakdown further into this one where the track lightens up with some pads and a cool, flowing melody. This however is rather nicely warped and transformed back into the driving sound we heard earlier, creating a perfect contrast and setting up the final stages of the tune very well.

2) Down & Dirty
'Down & Dirty' is a hugely different track. It runs along at a slower pace with clicky, fresh sounding percussion. The beats are majorly FAT and are complemented with a hint of gutsy bass giving the track an instantly massive sound. An early break introduces a host of futuristic techy sounding synths fx and ghostly samples. The severely twisted breaks filled with gritty bass effects are wonderfully created and particularly enjoyable. As with 'Black Mamba', there's a trancey breakdown which is kitted out with all the right pads, synth chords and gentle melodies. Again the noticeable contrast is there and it works even moreso in this track - the two different styles, tech and trance, fit so nicely together here. Soon enough though the twsited bass and fx are filtered back in and the track gets its stomp back on. The progression used here is quite original and is spot on I think. The entire track feels, eventually, like one huge climax and is extremely satisfying when listened to from start to finish. A wicked sounding track!

3) Black Mamba (Maarten Hercules Remix)
Maarten Hercules has taken a much different approach to his remix of 'Black Mamba'. It has a fairly quick pace, but the overall sound is much lighter. Equipped with a fluttering synthline and a funky, grooving bassline this one might be better suited to early sets. However, it does fatten up towards the middle as a bigger, trancier synth takes the lead. Whilst being a 'lighter' track in sound and feel, the percussion works hard to keep it lively so you shouldn't lose interest in this one either.

Conclusion:
It's great to hear more work from Orjan Nilsen, especially when it's this good. The two original tracks are the ones to watch out for here, with Orjan demonstrating his skills well over two different but exciting styles.
