Fred Baker fans will be please to know he will be releasing an artist album in the next month or so and as a taster of things to come here's his brand new EP on PIAS called Voices...
Do you remember the days of Mr Sam Vs. Fred Baker? I certainly do and since the pair went their different ways both have evolved into very successful solo artists. Fred would say he has his own style of kick named after him with his old pre beat kick drum he used to use on his records. His style these days is more on the progressive side of things with hidden uplifting elements poured into the mix two. His last release on PIAS came in the form of Sunshine which took its inspiration from Robert Miles legendary 'Children' record.
Release Date: OUT NOW!
:: Voices :: Voices (Progressive Mix) :: E-Elements
Voices is the first Fred baker track I've heard since his last release last year but you can't fault him for the last of material as he's been busy producing his artist album. I'm always a little curious with tracks that span past the ten minute barrier when they are not produced by Airwave as you can’t help but think just what keep you interested for that long. The track has very dark feel to it with how it builds up on itself. The beginning feeds in a mellow serving of atmospheric sythns with a chuggy bass line in the background. It's does have a catchy rythem in it that feeds in a harmonising but slightly tribal vocal sample. Thing of it as an African chant that when the main breakdown comes which is quite relaxing works very well in building character to the track. It's quite a substantial breakdown for a good three minutes it goes on for before beats and drums come back into play. The vocal samples work well after the break with a simple chord changing melody that’s bright and refreshing. The use of really inspiring deep riffs in the background create something catchy with this track. It took me a few plays to really get into it but once you do your glad you did because all the elements work well together.
I thought the original was on the proggy side but in a strange sense of irony the Progressive Mix is shorter than the original. The track has a different feeling to the original and it is the progressive record it is described to be. There is not so much noise going off in the background of the record with the beat and kicks being kept fairly simple. Sometimes with tracks they can just have to many things going on with them that’s distracting to the good bits. The opening riff which is deep and bass like builds things up to a string section that keeps to the same sound in the original but is highlighted more by the tone of it and lack of other sounds going off. It's like its floating over water with its strings and drips echo as the vocal sample stutters in and out. This one is very mellow and chilled out with a delightful break that feeds back the track just at the right moment. Bright and mellow is the vibe I'm getting from this mix.
E-Elements is a nice track to finish off this threesome. It's a bit of a mixture of both styles of sounds from Voices with the beat and drums building up but the watery strings playing the lead role catching your attention. The bass line is still very dark on the build up here with a short melody morphing into a stretched out lead that breaks into the main melody. The echo and ambiance of the melody are there in solo but shortly joined by main lead that started the track off. This one is another mellow sounding record with its dark moments.
Conclusion:
Solid stuff from Fred baker here. This release is more on the progressive side of things and those who love that slow building epic will embrace voices for sure. I wonder if his artist album will be on the same path or have a little bit of that old Fred uplifting peak time style about it. We will wait and see but for now check these out.
