Pete Tong returns on a ministry compilation with his Wonderland release. Two discs of House action mixed together by Pete to give you a taste of what you’re missing at his Wonderland gigs. Fans of his weekly radio show may well like this one...
Pete Tong has been in the business music longer that I have on this planet and is a guy who is regarded one of the best in dance. He's played all over the world and met just about every major A-List DJ you can think of. His weekly radio shows on BBC's Radio 1 include the Essential Selection every Friday, which as the name suggest really is essential listening. He also does a one hour weekly show on Thursdays promoting fresh new music from talents spread across various styles of dance. I would put him down as a house DJ but he does tend to play a good variation of records which display his great passion and hunger for anything that catches his ear.
A new compilation mixed by him then? That sounds pretty nice if I may say so and reminds me to dig out his old Ministry albums he used to mix back in the late 90's, I'm sure some of you will remember those. It was that era of Dance music that got me hooked into all the audio I listen to today. This new compilation that goes by the name of Wonderland ties in very nicely with his series of Wonderland club nights and his new home in Ibiza at Eden. Whatever his reasons for moving from Pacha to Eden you can be sure his music will remain of the highest quality.

As a regular listener to his weekly Essential Selection every Friday night I had a little clue to what this compilation would feature on it. This is all about the music though with no ramblings from Tong or snippets of information from the numerous guests he has on each week. A few of the tracks featured on here I remember hearing while getting up a good lather with the Herbal Essences in the shower, which I may add does not do to you what it does to the nice ladies on the TV advertisements. It has been a while since I touched up what’s hot and fresh in the world of quality House with Tong providing the guide.
The new Winx record 'Stay Out All Night' is one that caught my attention, not just being that I have loved most of his records but just the feel of it. Deep flowing backing sounds driven by an orgasmic muffled piano riffs and snuffed kicks that really appeal. You could talk about each track on here until your fingers went numb but the compilation is jam packed with up front stuff that I'm sure Tong got as an exclusive from his fellow DJ friends. New records here from Pryda, Mark Knight, Tyrrell, Paolo Mojo, X Press 2 and the record his used for his web show Fast Trax by Skylark. The music on here is top quality house throughout the two discs with some more on the progressive nature and others touching the funky side.
The two discs do not follow the usual slide of compilations by having two distinctly different styles and sound to them as they don’t really differ that much its just the second disc does not have as many tracks on it as the first. One of the highlights from the second disc is a quirky little track from Tyrell called 'LaLaLaLaLaLa' which is called that strange name because of the vocal sample saying just that. There is a smart and sexy build in here and a very electric guitar sounding riff that pops in by surprise. if I had this one o in the shower I'd have to build up a another lather for sure.
The mixing and arrangement of the whole compilation is flawless as you would expect from a real professional like Pete Tong. He knows his beats from his bangs that’s for sure and its spot on every record with a few overlapping melodies in there giving a familiar track a different edge to it.

Conclusion:
The title may suggest Pete has started up his own Theme Park but rest assured its another fine offering of mixed music from one of the legends in the Dance scene. Fresh house beats throughout the two discs with its relaxing vibe here and peaktime feel good house gem there you should have a look at this one. It is a great advert for his club nights and an indication of what to expect if you pop along to see him live sometime, good work Tongy.
