The third Edition of High Contrasts Presents series is here! The Dutch pair of Rank 1 has mixed together this finely crafted double disc compilation of excelling trance. Here are reasons why you should buy it...
There is no doubt that High Contrast are one of the leading labels in Dance at the moment with their pool of talented artists getting bigger by the week. The High Contrest Presents series is a way of showcasing their artists and let them just show you what their music is all about. Joop and Marcel Woods have had the pleasure of putting together the first two compilations but for the third in the series High Contrast has come up with the mighty Rank 1. They are a combination of two people, Piet Bervoets & Benno de Goeij and have been releasing quality records under various other aliases for years now. There joint efforts as Rank 1 have even hit chart success with the epic 'Airwave', the original got remixed a few times by the cheese monkeys but the original remains one of their finest offerings.
This is the duo's first compilation for 4 years and judging by my opinion after listening to it its been four years overdue.

What excited me the most about this one is just the music that’s jammed in there. Each disc has the right amount of tracks for a compilation so you get a good chunk of the record with each one. There area few updates old some of my personal favourites of all time and lots of new records that have been released, or soon to be, on the High Contrast label. The question does remain though with most compilations by aliases with more tan one name behind it, who mixed what? It doesn’t really matter but just one of those things you always wonder to save images of Piet & Benno wrestling each other at the mixer to get the next track on.
The theme with disc ones is very much on the tech trance with dabs of uplifting electric nature. The opening is a nice intro version of Arnej's They Always Come Back which sets the mix of in the correct fashion. Anyone remember Mansun's Wide Open space? Hands up if you do as its been remixed by Silverlake. It's a deep pounding greasy tech offering that features a nice drum sample on the main break with the familiar vocal going for it. I can't really fault any of the tracks in here as they all gel together perfectly. if the rolling melody and epic build up in Leon Boiler's 'Precursor' track does not get you in the mood your just a freak. Roland van Geldderen's latest single is bundled in here called 'Embrace Me'. Rank 1 have put their own remix in for this mix and I must say its a hum dinger. The end of that gives Marco V's fresh remix of Nic Chagwell's 'What You Need' even more punch when the melody for it boots in. It's another Leon Boiler production that gets the hairs standing again with his mash up of a Kamaya Painters classic 'Endless Wave'. That one came out of the blue as I put this on without looking at the track list before hand and the combination of the two tracks he's used work well.
The second disc picks up where the first left off by offering quality music from start to finish. Rank 1 slip in another of the latest remixes with the opening track 'Undone'. There was one niggling issue I found with a track called 'No Escape' by Memento. It's a very good track as it is don’t get me wrong but on the melody one of the keys could have done with a little tweak to make it that little more uplifting. I'd say that’s just me being picky more than anything. There are plenty of highlights through the mix here with new records from Jochen Miller, Menno De Jong & Mark Otten, Heatbeat and a beautiful guitar driven track by Orjan Nilsen known as 'La Guitarra'. The music is bright techy, electric, but without sliding it into the millions of genres they have these days, its just great Trance music.
Conclusion:
Superb! In a word, this one will be getting a few plays from me throughout the summer as it features of lot of music on the High Contrast label that you should get your hands on. No quibbles at the mixing here with Rank providing a smooth transition from track to track. High Contrast deliver another essential release and what’s better this time its a compilation. Go buy it.
