If you've not caught wind of SvD's debut artist album then where have you been for the past few months...?!
:: Sander van Doorn - Supernaturalistic :: Nebula / EMI :: NEBCD9016
Tracklist 01) Look Inside Your Head 02) Riff 03) By Any Demand 04) 15 05) Pura Vida 06) Sushi 07) The Bass 08) Lobby 09) Apple 10) Grasshopper 11) Dozer 12) Outrospective 13) Sia - The Girl You Lost (Sander van Doorn Remix) (Bonus Track!)
A mixture of familiar and maybe unfamiliar tracks there for some. More and more of these are seeing individual releases as time passes. 'Grasshopper' showed up first some time ago on Oxygen Recordings, marking Sander's change in style from tough tech to more deeep and minimal sounds. 'By Any Demand' was a smash last year, as was the almighty 'Riff', which got hammered in Ibiza by Carl Cox. Recently, tracks like 'Dozer', 'Apple', 'Pura Vida', 'Sushi' and 'The Bass' have been popping up and being grabbed eagerly by DJs.
The album itself is kicked off by 'Look Inside Your Head' which is deep and moody in a lazy, melodic kind of way. Very suited to the opening of an album, perhaps that was it;s purpose, as I've not seen this one on any release lists so far.
The next couple of tracks ramp up the tempo as Riff comes in with its totally unmistakable and undeniable, well, riff. This is folloowed by 'By Any Demand' which, along with Riff, sees Sander take his sounds back to how you were used to hearing him with his first few releases on Oxygen. The pace is kept up in Sander's productions as we go on to hear the simply titled track '15' which hilst being kind of subdued, still has a great techy flow with an irresistible bassline. Again not one I;ve seen on the release lists but I do hope it comes out as it;s a pretty nifty track.
'Sushi' turns out to be one of SvD's more 'different' sounding tracks. Very minimal and very specialised in style, nature and hence usage too, in my opinion.
'The Bass' brings the tempo back up with, well, some severe bass, as the track suggests. This leads into something totally different and quite unexpected. 'Lobby' is a breakbeat piece which features great rhythms and catchy melodic hooks. A new side to SvD is seen here. Quite interesting to see where it could lead in the future...
The remaining tracks, 'Apple', 'Grasshopper' and 'Dozer' play out in true tough SvD style and then you hit 'Outrospective', which is an ambient piece used to cull your frenzy and finish the album off smoothly.
...
Or so you're supposed to think! As a 'bonus track' is included in the form of Sander's remix of Sia - The Girl You Lost. A quirky track indeed - the beat it sports is very minimal and deep, but nestled within are sections featuring the ever-so catchy vocal which has people singing along wildly in the clubs.
Conclusion:
A comprehensive look into the productions of Sander van Doorn. A very listenable album but it mostly highlights his newer sounds and not those which, arguably, rocketed him to stardom.
