The Swedish producer Carl B has had a slow but constant stream of releases over 2006 and 2007. 2008 is no different, and one of his latest is a double track release on Daif Records - check out 'Last Summer' and '6AM'...
:: Carl B - Last Summer / 6AM :: Daif Records :: DAIFR032
1) Last Summer This one grabs you by the time it finds its first breakdown. A chilled out acoustic guitar brings home a cool and calming summer melody. Backed by some rich pad backing chords and synths which play fading, rising scales, one of those fantastically enjoyable balaeric 'Shah-esque' moods is created. With this combination of synth and guitar, there's simply no escaping the summery, Ibizian vibe. There is no doubt a lot of feeling here, but instead of it being powered out in a fountain of euphoria, it's controlled and laid out effectively by some simple but top notch instruments.
2) 6AM This is the meaner sounding side of the EP. A menacing bass coupled with an even more menacing stabbing synth takes an early lead. This is tempered somewhat by a rather funky old skool piano throwing some chords around in the background and the use of synths to smooth out the leading parts. This is the kind of sound I usually associate with Carl B productions. It's trancey - there's no doubt about that - but there's a tough edge which while subtle, does carry a special dominance over the track.
Conclusion:
Two solid tracks with different natures at heart that are definitely worth a listen!
