It's late July, the British summer is trying its hardest to produce more than 2 consecutive days worth of sunshine, so that can only mean that the immense Global Gathering is just around the corner! This year's compilation to celebrate the annual super-festival is a 2 disc set featuring a wide range of artists and styles...

That's one very diverse tracklist. Last year's offering was spread nicely over 3 CDs, here though we've been denied the 3rd disc.
CD1 goes for the 'summery, festival vibe', so it claims. It kicks off rather addictively with a remixed chart favourite - 'Stop Me' from Mark Ronson. We see the Freemasons, dance legends Underworld, the iconic Moby, techno maestro Sven Vath, the Audio Bullys and David Guetta all making appearances. Plenty of high profile, well known action then that's for sure. The actual direction that it takes though is somewhat undefined. The first few tracks are kind of 'charty' and then everything else from then on is pretty much house/electro-house oriented in some way or another with a few random wildcards thrown in. Quite listenable, but some people may not see this CD as a Global Gathering style of compilation.
CD2 sees even more familiar names come into play. Mark Knight, Funkagenda, Jose Amnesia, the legend that is John Digweed, 4 Strings, Richard Durand, the meteoric hero Sander van Doorn, Tiesto, Oakenfold, Above & Beyond, trance king Ferry Corsten and the #1 DJ himself, Armin van Buuren (plus a load more) all make their mark on this 2nd disc of the album. This seems much more like what you'd expect from a Global Gathering CD just by looking at the track list even before having a listen. The music plays out quite progressive to start with, but things are getting notably tougher just before the half way point has been reached. This is the best part of the compilation for me, totally. You get rocked by First State's remix of 4 Strings - Catch A Fall, Richard Durand's 'Weep', SvD's new 'Apple' and DJ Preach's absolutely blinding remix of Tiesto - Carpe Noctum which is definitely my favourite track from both discs (where is that single release?!?). They've tried to squeeze some proper trance in at the end too. The amazingly beautiful 'Siren's Of The Sea' is dubiously fade-mixed in from Oakenfold's 'Not Over' and then we're treated to one of Armin's new singles 'Going Wrong', which of course is fresh from his new album.
Conclusion:
Hmmm! An interesting result here. Quite a mixed bag on the tracklist front and it really does feel as if CD3 from last year has become the flavour of 2008's first disc and CD's 2 & 3 from last year have been squished into what is now 2008's second disc. Overall, CD1 is an easy listen and CD2 is filled with some really top end tracks, albeit with a few 'unimaginative' mixes.
