Paul van Dyk's last artist album is still selling very well and here is the follow up EP with four banging remixes including one from Paul himself. It's an EP worth diving into and checking out...
Paul van Dyk has been on tour promoting his last artist album 'In Between' ever since its release back in late 2007. It does seem a long time ago and since the album release Paul has only used 'Let Go' as a single release - which came out earlier on in the year. The wait is over for more material from the album with remixes being the dish of the day for this new EP release on his main Vandit label.
:: Talk In Grey (Paul van Dyk Remix) :: Castaway (Jon O'Bir Remix) :: New Yor City (Super8 & Tab Remix) :: Complicated (Kyau & Albert Remix)
First up on this foursome of joy is a remix by Paul van Dyk of 'Talk In Grey' which feature the vocals of Ryan Merchant. The original track was one of my favourites on the album and also one of the shortest. Paul’s remix is just a shade over four minutes so its not a track to come on if you need to nip to the loo for a quick one mid set. The remix is not much different from the original in terms of structure but the pace has been buffed up and the beat has been scuffed up making it not as punchy. On the lead up there is a rumbling bass rip that leads the track in and out. This one is fast, short and to the point but doesn’t have that edge the original had for me.
Jon O'Bir's been a man to watch this year with his debut artist album and production work getting better with each release. It shows here in Castaway as he has produced a very up tempo remix for this EP. The sharp beat that starts the track off swiftly gets a kick added starts to take pace. The opening sequence feeds in a gritty electric riff that unleashes itself big time and swoops back and forth. It's deep and gives the speakers a real workout on the lead up. The sounds tick over in the background as a string feeds in from the distance with all the beats dropping as the vocal comes in. Lo-Fi Sugar provides the vocals here with the main break mostly unchanged from Paul’s original. The vocal breaks and back comes the beat complimented by the swooping deep electric riff. This is big room energy from Jon here and although I'm sure he got his ideas from another track it really does work.
Kyau & Albert pop in for a remix of Complicated and from the style they used to produced this remix is very soft and down tempo to the ear at first. Once you get into it though the chord changing string that comes in mid track turns it up a notch. That’s not before a nice productive build that sets the mood nicely for what is a relaxing little remix. It's another female vocal on this one with Ashley Tomberlin putting her magic over it. The vocals along with harmonic sweeps behind them create the mood. The main melody that comes in forms the hook on the track here with the chords changing then fading away to bring back the vocal then pulsating back into the track. It took me a few listens to get into this one but when you do there is good to be found in here.
Super & Tab have already produced one of the tracks of the year for me so I was very excited when I saw their name down for a remix on New York City. I can't say the original track by Paul did that much for me but its Ashley Tomberlin putting the gorgeous vocals down here. This track was originally a collaboration between Paul, Starkillers (Nick Terranova) and Austin Leeds so what have Super8 and (DJ) Tab done to this. They have created an uplifting and flowing piece of trance with a punchy bassline. The beat is sticky and Sharpe with a bright energetic melody that gives the mix its uplifting quality.
Conclusion:
Paul van Dyk EP's are always an essential buy and its very rare you get a bad one. Jon O'Bir puts in the best remix amongst this four here with his thumping remix of Castaway. Overall though this is another release on Vandit that gets my tick of approval.
