A feature on singer and songwriter, Marcie Swartz, and her unique and popular radioshow Behind The Lyric...
Singer/songwriter Marcie has without a doubt been the busiest female vocalist in the last two years releasing more than 70 records. Her current track, 'Stay With Me', reached #1 at Beatport and was featured on Armin van Buuren's A State Of Trance radio show. Her other track 'Love From Nothing', with Neon Stereo, has been played by Paul van Dyk on his radio program Fritz. Even though the American, who is currently living in Boston, has been busy non-stop with new tracks and projects, she has found time to host her own online radio show called Behind the Lyric.
This unique show is not your typical DJ mix program, but a one hour journey telling the stories behind the lyrics in electronic dance music. Behind The Lyric debuted in the summer of 2007 and can be heard worldwide on 15 stations including DI.FM.
Marcie Swartz had a peculiar experience leading her to come up with the idea behind this one of a kind show. "I was walking home one day thinking about lyrics for a track when I tripped on the sidewalk, hit my head and bent my glasses. Somehow I didn´t forget the track I was thinking about. That night at 5am, I woke up and had the idea of the show in my head. I wanted to hear how other people came up with their song ideas.", she says.
Behind The Lyric is a non-stop DJ mix, but with commentary throughout the program from singers and producers. Singers talk about their experiences with song writing and what the collaboration process was like, while producers talk about making tracks. The commentary is a very up to date kind of format reminding you of one of the DVD movie type of commentaries often given by the director of the movie. Some of the well known guests featured so far have been Jes Brieden, Tiff Lacey, Sied van Riel, Shelly Harland and others, from countries like the USA, Germany, UK, Egypt, Italy, Holland and Sweden.
Even though the show concentrates highly on singers and song writing, a DJ/producer spotlight is also featured making the show more diverse. The program demonstrates that making a vocal track has as much to do with a producers work as with a vocalist's contribution. “Tweaking vocals is a difficult process for a singer. It can be compared to a producer tweaking a snaredrum or another instrument sound.”, says the multi talented Marcie.
So far there have been seven episodes, and the feedback has been extremely positive. Feedback has opened dialogue with listeners about what music means to them. Vocalists have enjoyed doing something new and are always hungry to tell their stories. Behind The Lyric has been a terrific experience for Marcie as she goes on to say, “I have learned a lot during this experience. It has inspired me to see how other singers work. Most importantly, I feel this program has opened a door for female singers to be recognized in a new way, in an industry that is dominated by men.”. In the next months, Marcie continues to be busy and will release new tracks including an EP called 'Night & Day' with D:Folt, 'Coming Back To Me' with Whiteliner and 'No One' with Yamin aka Ben Bording.
