Anyone who's been keeping tabs on the Anjuna stables recently will easily be tantalised merely by the name of the album let alone that meaty looking tracklist! But before your eyes are 30 of Anjunabeats' finest current and future releases all mixed expertly by the heroic trio, Above & Beyond.
2008 has been immensely fruitful for the Anjuna boys - they kicked off the year playing to one million (yes, 1,000,000!) people on New Years Eve 2007 in Rio. Their popularity is constantly on the rise which will set them in good stead for bettering their excellent #6 result in last year's DJ Mag Top 100 poll. Their Trance Around The World radioshow is consistently in the iTunes Top 10 Podcasts. They finally got round to releasing their OceanLab album and aside from a few other wicked singles releases they've now added Volume 6 to 2008's list of achievements - alongside multiple sell out appearances worldwide of course!.
Anyway, the album. CD1 is the venture into all things Anjunadeep, Anjunabeats' deep and progressive sub-label. The journey here travels almost full circle, demonstrating the full spectrum of the sound that Anjunadeep has now developed thanks to its ever strengthening following and the talent held by its roster of artists. It kicks off all cool and housey and the CD instantly captures you with irresistible grooves of Paul Keeley - Paper Jet. Reaching the fantastic 'Cocktail Bar' by Joonas Hahmo, you notice a slightly tougher vein in the sound. This is where the deeper, proggier and tech driven sounds come in to play. Buoyed by the undeniable piano and vibe from 'Cocktail Bar' however, this continuation works perfectly. The final 3rd of CD1 sees a combination of sounds to mix things up a bit. We see another grade A piece of work from Joonas Hahmo in the form of 'Tampere By Night', something very different in Mat Zo - Defined and then to finish things up there's a strong hint of trance to be found in Oliver Smith's 'Restless'.
CD2 is where we're going to hear the pure trance sound that Anjunabeats is most famous for. Needless to say this is a stonking lineup of tracks from the outset. The CD glides through a progression of trance starting with the calmer, more proggy numbers from the likes of Signalrunners (and their new sound), Sundriver and Boom Jinx. Half way sees quality coming from all angles - The Thrillseekers make a seemingly random but very welcome appearance with 'The Last Time', Super8 & Tab - Elektra is a strong favourite and a blistering new track from the formidable N20, 'Show Me', is put on show. Driving towards the end, the melodic brilliance is kept flowing strong with brand new efforts from Kandi & Neumann with 'Let Go' and a second offering for the album from Super8 & Tab with 'Delusion'. The pinnacle of the album, for me at least, has to be the penultimate track. The Kings of tech trance Bart Claessen & Dave Schiemann form an unquestionable alliance to put forward 'Madness', which has to be on the shortlist for one of the tunes of the year. I rocked out to this gem in Amnesia this year, and dammit it was good.
Conclusion:
Yet another show of sheer strength from Above & Beyond and all the associated talent at Anjunabeats. It's amazing that time after time a label can deliver such consistently high results. And here it all is, packaged onto 2 CDs. You can't call yourself a fan of trance if you don't at least want to buy this album.
