Robert Burian Visits Technoclub

In the past few years, Robert Burian has become a household name in the trance scene with his different styles of music that he produces. In the year 2005 he signed his debut euphoric trance single with the title 'Mindlessness' under German label Flowmotion Recordings. Since then he has released 22 tracks and 20 remixes His first vinyl was played by some interesting names and was also broadcasted on BBC Radio 1. Robert didn't have any time to relax, so he made some other stuff to make his music more popular. There were also a lot of singles under many labels all over the world. You can find his trance productions under his pseudonym - BuRo. Worthy of a note is the fact that Robert has a very big support by big names in the world. Today there is really plenty of releases from Robert Burian / Rob B or BuRo, every of these pseudonyms means something different, the BuRo nickname is used usually for uplifting trance, Rob B for something more progressive and Robert Burian was used for house music, but this was changed for tech trance. One of the biggest successes was signing under very popular label Armada and concretely under Markus Schulz’s Coldharbour Recordings with the tune ‘Activation’. It had quite heavy support too. In these days the studio is completely rebuilt and Robert is focusing more on his new ideas. 2008 has been very busy for him with many new releases including two tech trance smashers ‘Cobra’ and ‘Doom’ for Talla 2XLC’s label Tetsuo. He also has done two incredible remixes for ‘Feel’ and ‘Monique’ for one of trances big newcomers in 2008, Sundriver. He presents his unique sound in his monthly show GLOBAL BUNKER, which is broadcasted every third Monday of the month on the progressive channel at 21:00 CET. He will be making his Technoclub debut in Frankfurt, Germany on November 14th.

i:Vibes: Hi Robert, thanks for taking some time to speak to www.technoclub.tc and www.ivibes.nu. 2008 has been a fantastic year for you. One could almost say your breakout year. What is your nicest memory music wise in 2008?

Robert Burian: Hello, first of all I want to say that the 2008 has been a very cool year for me, especially on the music side. Yep, we can name it as “breakout” year, but I have still a lot of “work” to do. One of my biggest dreams in my life was to write music for the people and if people like it then my dreams come true. That’s the spirit of making the music from inside. There is no direct answer to your question, because there were a lot of moments in 2008 which made me happy. DJ performances with big names in the scene gave me some good experiences, signing with the biggest label in the world was also nice, but to be honest one of the biggest moments was to meet Talla personally, because I always liked what he does. So as you can see, there is not a clear answer to this kind of question. This year is just good, but I hope the next one will be much better and the one after much much better.

i:Vibes: You have released on one of trances finest labels Armada as well as other great labels like Shah Music and Tetsuo. You produce first class music. What is the next step for you as a producer to get over the next hump and be even more known?

Robert Burian: At this time there are some nice releases in promo already and another 20 or so are in schedule. The next “hump” will be my next goal, but it’s top secret at this moment. I don’t want to talk about it as it is under construction, but people have to look forward to the things which I am preparing.

i:Vibes: You are from the Slovak Republic. What was your childhood like?

Robert Burian: Yes I was born in Nitra, it’s the third biggest town in our country. It’s situated about 100km from the capital Bratislava and in present I am more often in the capital. My childhood was amazing, what can I say? It was just perfect, the biggest help for me were my parents of course, but a lot of things I had to do on my own. When I was 6 years old I attended piano lessons and believe it or not it was completely changing my point of view to my life. I began to love the piano sound and I was really interested in that. The other things in my childhood were normal, school, fun, music, girls haha, and etc.

Who were your early musical inspirations while you were growing up?

Robert Burian: I totally love the old funk tunes, I was listening to them when I was a child and sometimes I am listening to that kind of music nowadays. It is still a big inspiration for me. These days I have my own (Jazz improvisation) piano lector and I am getting back into the piano world. Kinds of music I really like and which are giving me a lot of inspirations are Funk, Jazz, Ambient, Chillout etc. I don’t have a concrete person who is something like an idol for me, there are a lot of people who have my respect and sometimes surprise me one of them, next time another one.

i:Vibes: How did you come in contact with EDM and what was the deciding moment, where you knew that this type of music would be your passion?

Robert Burian: This is a usual question and I always like to answer it, because I remember this moment very well. When I was a child I was travelling a lot, I mean I had a lot of vacations with my parents. I visited many countries like Poland, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Spain, but the deciding moment was in the Netherlands. I was there in a town called EPE or so, I visited a local disco club, it was something like a party for children. There I had my first time listening to the very well known “2Unlimited” music and I was like “Oooh what is this?”. And this was the big deciding moment. From this time I was searching for this kind of music and I was studying what was behind it. As the time went by, I remember hahah, sorry but it is quite funny for me. I remembered those times. I had a satellite receiver and I was recording sets and tracks from the satellite radios to old cassettes. Sometimes I didn’t sleep the whole night and I was listening to everything that those radios broadcasted. I remember it was from Astra and some German radios.

i:Vibes: What was your first trance record and why was this record so special?

Robert Burian: It depends what kind of record you mean, but I will explain both of them. If you mean the first trance “record” as the first trance song I ever finished, then it was something of a magical moment for me, I was listening to it all the time and it was done in Fast Tracker 2. And if you are asking about a record which was 1st released, then it was a cool moment too because, I found somewhere on the web an email address of a label where to send demo and I sent it. The special thing on this was that I didn’t need to send it to any other labels because the first one to which I sent it took it and made me my first own vinyl in my life.

i:Vibes: How was your entrance into the trance scene? Was it difficult or was it easy? Did you have any musical mentor, who helped you in the early going?

Robert Burian: The entrance wasn’t so easy. It was very hard work and a long time trip. I was on my own and I am producing for 15 years or so. Someone is a star in 2 years or so but I am not like that and I am also not interested in being a star in a short while. I am musician you know. As I told you in previous questions, I have a musical lector, but for piano not for electronic music. My mentors for electronic music are my heart and my mind.

i:Vibes: You produce trance, progressive, tech trance, house and hip hop. You are a very versatile producer. What are the main reasons why you produce so many musical styles?

Robert Burian: I don’t know, maybe it’s because I like all of them. I have some soulful house releases out, under some German and American labels. I am still producing hip hop because I am a very well known hip hop producer in my country. At this moment I am working on a video clip for the local hip hop superstar. I also still like the trance stuff, but not the uplifting anymore. Nowadays the uplifting trance songs are not what they used to be. In present I prefer tech house, trance and minimal. I am trying to write “intelligent” music.

i:Vibes: Do you have to be in different moods to produce all these different type of styles?

Robert Burian: Yes, I am not a robot you know. Sometimes it’s hard to make tech trance, if I am in a mood which needs to be used for a chillout song. The mood is one of the most important elements which I need for producing.

i:Vibes: If you could use one word or a phrase to describe the overall Robert Burian Sound for all music styles, how would you name it?

Robert Burian: Simply – Intelligent music.

i:Vibes: When you’re in the studio, do you have a certain formula how you go about making a track? Some producers look for a bassline first or a melody. How do you do it?

Robert Burian: Everytime I start from a completely clear and new project file. I used to make the melody first, but I don’t produce like this anymore. Today I am writing music from the beginning to the end, I found out that the best thing for me. It’s good and fast, but still quality.

i:Vibes: What does it mean to release for Armin van Buuren’s label Armada? Do you have a lot of pressure to produce something first class?

Robert Burian: Yes it’s a cool feeling, but not for a long time because my final goal doesn’t exist. I wanted to have releases under Armada, now I will have a nice number released under this label and that means time to focus on another goal. Maybe I will be never completely happy because of giving goals to myself forever. But its fun for me and it makes my life more interesting. If I have a lot of pressure to do something first class? Hmm, I don’t know. I just produce and if I have a lot of inspiration then it’s done sooner and if I have no inspiration then it’s later, but never a big pressure.

i:Vibes: Your remix for ‘Feel’ from Sundriver is really beautiful. What is the most important thing for you in a remix?

Robert Burian: To make it more interesting than the original is. I mean to keep the stuff from original, but add something from me, the usual Burian sound. And everything I need is to love the remix enough. So the most important thing is to be in love with the track.

i:Vibes: The ‘Monique’ remix is really incredible. You really understand how to work with so many aspects of the sounds. There’s the techy start, the atmospheric break and the guitar ending with techy elements. This is a perfect remix, how happy were you with the result?

Robert Burian: Yep, this remix has a quite heavy support already. I liked the original of this song much so it was not hard to make another exciting mix of it. I am happy with it, but not totally 100%, but this is my usual problem. I am happy with the latest track I make, but if I produce another one then I don’t like the one before as much as the last I made.

i:Vibes: You produced two big tech trance smashers ‘Cobra’ and ‘Doom’ for Talla 2XLC’s label Tetsuo. How did the contact to Talla come about?

Robert Burian: The contact with Talla was one of the biggest moments in my music life, I was playing in Dopler club in our capital city and the headliner of this party was Talla. I went backstage and he was doing an interview or something right at that moment. I was there with my girl and she was so excited because I told her much about who Talla was. We really had a good chat and a really good time. He told me a lot of interesting things and he changed my point of view on many things. I am glad I met someone like him in my life.

i:Vibes: Soon you will release ‘Orion / Viper’ on Tetsuo. What can we expect from these tracks?

Robert Burian: It’s something new. I am always trying to show something new. I think the ‘Orion’ track will be more for the trance people and the ‘Viper’ is more for the house side, but man never knows. As I always said – time will show and we will see. It will be another nice release and people can look forward to it already.

i:Vibes: ‘Vegas’ is a new track being released soon on Armada. What can we expect from this track?

Robert Burian: Yes, ‘Vegas’ is coming out soon under Markus Schulz’s label – Coldharbour. This track has a long story. I produced it during different seasons in my life. Markus played it everywhere on his tours and he also played it couple of times in his very well known show Global DJ Broadcast. I think he also played it on his Sensation White performances. There will be some nice remixes with the release too, one of them had a premiere already and this nice remix was done by another very well know producer – Andrew Bennett. And what can you expect from this track? I will definitely play it on 14.11. in Technoclub so you can make your own decision.

i:Vibes: Talla 2XLC has been the Techno Pope for Germany for many years. How important has he been for music in general?

Robert Burian: He is still the idol of many producers. I have the luck to know him as a person and all I can say, is he knows what he is doing and he is doing it good. He has been really important to the music especially for me. He has made a lot of hits and there are not many people who can do this.

i:Vibes: Do you remember the first time where you came in contact with Talla’s music? How has he inspired you?

Robert Burian: I don’t exactly remember when it was, but I remember the time when I was really young and I recorded the sets via my satellite receiver on cassettes. I heard the name Talla a couple of times in the shows. Also I remember I saw some video clips like ‘Can you feel the silence’ on the Viva TV. I love his innovations in every track he did.

i:Vibes: You will be giving your debut in the legendary Technoclub of Talla 2XLC. How excited are you?

Robert Burian: I can’t describe the feelings, it’s something different, something very special and cool. I am excited and I can’t wait to be there and play my hottest stuff.

i:Vibes: What does the Technolcub mean to you?

Robert Burian: Too much to describe also. I know it’s a legendary club for big names, it’s a pleasure to have a chance playing there.

i:Vibes: What kind of set can we await from you? 50% proggy and 50% uplifting?

Robert Burian: I usually starts from slower tunes to faster ones, but sometimes I change my set completely during the performance, it depends how much fun is out there.

i:Vibes: What is the most important thing for you as a DJ?

Robert Burian: To make people happy.

i:Vibes: What was the craziest experience that you have had behind the decks?

Robert Burian: I was playing with Marco V at one of the biggest parties in my country at arena for 6000 people and one girl went to me and asked me to play Shakira. That was amazing!

i:Vibes: What are your impression of the German Trance scene? What artists do you respect?

Robert Burian: I like German trance a lot, you have a lot of talented producers there. I like Kyau & Albert, I played with them couple of times and they are cool people also. Talla has also very big respect from me. And I can’t forget to say the biggest ones as Armin, Tiesto or Mr. Schulz, but in fact I don’t have any concrete artist who I respect the most.

i:Vibes: Where do you see yourself in five years?

Robert Burian: This is a hard question, but I can tell you what I will do for sure. I’ve produced music for about 15 years, I think I will never stop doing this, so I think in five years there should be some really nice progress and successes behind me.

i:Vibes: What are your five all time favourite tracks?

Robert Burian: Tiesto did some nice tracks, Corsten too, but I don’t really remember the names of those tracks as it was on the very beginning of the style Trance. There are some other tunes I loved too, but sorry I forgot the names. From today’s songs I like Duderstadt’s progressive mixes, Glen Morrison, Pyda, Lange etc.

i:Vibes: What are your hobbies?

Robert Burian: Music, fitness, my girl, my dog and music again!

i:Vibes: Thank you Robert for the chat! We are looking forward to seeing you in the Technoclub soon!!!
