After releasing on Resonate Records last year, High Above & Blue Wings are joining forces, this time for Monster Tunes' sister label, Eternity, for some good old fashioned trance...

:: High Above & Blue Wings - The Ladder To The Sky
:: Eternity Recordings
:: ETR008

1) The Ladder To The Sky (Original Mix)

High Above & Blue Wings have stepped up their game and come up with a polished production. Whilst not breaking any new ground, they've achieved what I think this track was aimed at. The name of the track, 'The Ladder To The Sky', feel like a 'proper' song title, gives the track purpose and the delivery of the finished product demonstrates that - something which many tunes these days seem to lack.

Without doubt, the first two or three minutes are used to establish the track - no awards to be won here, just a well paced build up of pads, hints of melodic synth, a decent and empowering bassline and an addictive rhythm. The sounds are all extremely crisp and excellently pronounced, making the whole thing sound fresh and clean. This is really important as I'm hearing more and more essentially decent tracks getting killed by bad production and/or poor mastering.

The breakdown is where the story begins to unfold. Backed by pads, some orchestral strings and a piano play out the beginnings of the main melodic element of the piece. A breakbeat is used to add some spice before it is eaten up by a roll into the full on sections where the melody firmly takes hold. The melody at this point is endearing and still holds your interest as it hasn't actually been playing for long since the breakdown started.

Overall a great idea which has been very well realised and translated into a quality trance.

2) The Ladder To The Sky (Underwater Remix)
Underwater puts in some excellent remix work with this one. The result is a great compliment to the already decent original. It is a bit long mind - 10 minutes. This is mainly due to a long intros and outros, not to mention a couple of mini breakdowns.

One of the main improvements Underwater has applied to 'The Ladder To The Sky' is also in the production - the general feel of the track is now one of greater fullness. The sounds are richer, the basses deeper, the pads more succulent.

Pre-breakdown, the melody is teased for quite a while and this teasing develops into the full thing during the central breakdown, once it comes around. The piano work here is much improved, it has to be said, and the intertwining melodies of the synths and piano are something to behold. Lots of emotion here in this track which is rich in the 'feel good' factor.

Conclusion:
The best we've heard from Eternity yet, I reckon. Underwater's remix is impressive, I do hope that there's more in the pipeline in this particular style of trance.
