I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it. Tiesto is like Marmite - you're either going to love him or hate him. Fortunately I think the time has finally passed where it almost seemed, according to some people at least, the fashion to put Tiesto down. The fact is simple though - you can't deny his amazing career, his technical ability and his passion for the music.
ISOS was inspired by, mixed and record in Thailand whilst Tiesto was touring there in the spring of 2008. The album, sub-titled 'Asia', is said to capture the "peaceful and intensively passionate way of life" that Tiesto encountered during his stay. What Tiesto goes on to say is how, basically, CD1 is a musical reflection on his experiences of the country and that CD2 is what ripped the clubs apart when he played his gigs there. Seems simple enough to me!
For CD1, what this means is that it could almost be labelled as 'genreless'. You can't put your finger on what it is - trance, house, ambient, progressive. It's none of those things. What it is, is a collection of tracks which are deep, thoughtful and pretty easy going. There's a nice and even distribution of vocal and acoustically led tracks and the pace is very steady at a cool 130BPM. You could give this CD to anyone as a present - even those who haven't heard of Tiesto or don't listen to that "boom boom boom" music - and I reckon a substantial percentage would be very pleased indeed. It's the kind of music that could appeal to a wide range of people.
CD2 hits a pretty generalised cross section of sounds. We start house, then touch on some electro-style sounds and end up with something which is definitely trancey in nature. I was lucky enough to hear Tiesto play in Ibiza this year and I think it is a good representation of what you can expect to hear from him. It doesn't go as hard as he might do at a live event which is, I'd imagine, to keep the target audience at a maximum. Not a problem really.
Both CDs kick off and finish with very pleasant ambient intro and outro tracks, rounding the edges off well, giving the whole thing a "finished package" kind of feel. The mixing is... fine really. It's on, not too jumpy (although some mixes do seem a little forced on CD2) and it's much better than some of the questionable mixes that were apparent in ISOS 6 from last year!
Conclusion:
Overall, music for pretty much everyone! I'm very happy with this album - it is pleasing to listen to and is a welcome chapter in the ISOS legacy.
