The sixth instalment of Discover's 'Live As...' compilation has hit the stores and its mixed by one of this years rising starts Activa. Bringing you the live atmosphere in your front room is what this series is all about...
There have been a few mix compilation series over the years that with each new volume it immediately screams out to be an essential purchase. Tiesto's (or DJ Tiesto as he was known) Magik series is one I'd name, 'In Trance We Trust' is another but a relatively new face on the scene has notched its way into that kind of category. That is this series brought to you by John Askew's Discover label. What started as a compilation originally called 'Live as F**cking F**ck' in its early volumes is now known as just 'Live As...''. The idea behind the series is simple. Put one talented DJ in front of a bustling live crowd for 80 or so minutes and let him play music with no edit, cuts, re-workings or studio meddling interrupting. What they record on the night is what goes into the CD!
It's a good job then they pick decent DJ's then and not your local Pete Tong wannabe. This instalment they have recorded Activa playing live at the Digital Society in Leeds which is right here in the chilly UK. One pumped up crowd, one of the freshest sounds in Trance react together to bring a superb compilation that stands out from most you will usually listen to.

This high powered mix is just spread over the one disc but its worth every penny you pay for it. Spread over the seventeen tracks are new records from Tom Colontonio, Cesar Luga and Neal Scarborough. The style is as you would expect with Activa's sound and that’s high energy thumping trance with uplifting chords, beats and bass to send a ripple down your neck. The crowd you can hear providing the atmosphere in the background really add depth to the mix and in a way make it even more uplifting.
My highlight of the mix is a new track from Cesar Luga which is as uplifting as they come and certainly got my ears aroused. The break on it feeds in a gorgeous string of chords that really get you involved. Truth be said I don’t know much about Cesar but he's produced a track I can't wait to get my hands on this year. This compilation is not about any one track or just a bunch of hits. It's a demonstration of Activa's DJ skills not just his production ones. You will find a few special edits with some of the tracks here which is quite common with DJ's making tracks more user friendly for their style they play out.
The mixing is spot on and if you’re going to get picky its not as perfect or polished as a studio mix. That's the point of this series as if it's going to be perfect what would be the point of recording it live. The mixes add character and feel to the mix so you really do get that 'Live As...' feeling when hearing it. Those who enjoy a good Live set will undoubtedly enjoy this mix as essentially it is just that.
Conclusion:
His name may well remind you of a dairy product that helps with digestion but this brilliant demonstration of just what you can expect from an Activa set is quite an essential purchase. Who said January was a shit month for music, eh? Go buy this!
