© Sean TyasYou know your getting somewhere when Radio 1 come knocking at the door for an Essential mix and Sean Tyas will be on the mix this Valentines day morning. We caught up with Sean for a few words...

Sean Tyas has been making quite a name for himself over the past few years within the Trance community after a success of breakthrough tracks and remixes. His high energy style of Trance has been pounding club speakers all over the globe and is building up quite a reputation as being one of the greatest Trance producers around. His production talents created tracks like 'One More Night Out' and the fantastic 'Lift' with his latest single 'Melbourne' doing the business once more.

He makes his debut appearance on the famous Essential Mix on Radio One on the 14th February and will join the likes of Sasha, Paul van Dyk, John Digweed, Carl Cox to spin up some musical euphoria over the airwaves. We caught up with Sean for his thoughts on appearing on the mix and just for a chinwag on what he's been up to.

i:Vibes: Last year saw a real re-birth for the Trance scene with so many new tracks and artists popping up from nowhere. Who impressed you most with their production releases throughout last year?

Sean Tyas: Probably Tom Colontonio & Bjorn Akesson. Also Heatbeat out of Argentina have been popping out some amazing productions as well.

i:Vibes: The Sean Tyas name has only been involved in the Trance scene for five years or so but in that time your reputation has grown tenfold to one of the hottest producers on the scene today. Looking back what music influenced you to produce the style of music you do today?

Sean Tyas: Dancing as a clubber on New York’s now-closed Twilo dancefloor. When that club was open and you had people like Paul van Dyk, Carl Cox, Sven Väth, and Sasha & Digweed basically all monthly, it was inevitable to be inspired by constant new sounds.

i:Vibes: What albums really got you hooked into Dance music and Trance in particular?

Sean Tyas: Well electronic music for one, I really got hooked by The Prodigy, old Chemical Brothers, & old Moby stuff especially. I think the Moby stuff really perked up my ears the melodic sound of dance music and how beautiful it could be.

i:Vibes: Not many people know much about the ‘Before Sean Tyas’ story. What did you do before you starting pumping out inspiring Sean Tyas tracks?

Sean Tyas: I actually went to school for Illustration in Manhattan. I originally wanted and expected to be an Anime artist or animator! Random I know!

i:Vibes: The style you have today is extremely energetic and packed full of emotion. How would you describe your style of Trance?

Sean Tyas: That’s pretty much it, very driving and energetic, but not soooooo deep or intricate that people won’t get it immediately on the dancefloor. I know when I’m on a dancefloor and I hear a track for the first time, I want to already have a feel where it’s going, so I know what I need to do, and in all my tracks I try to hint at whats coming so people aren’t tricked at any point, they can just ride it and enjoy it! This is about fun, it’s not a murder mystery.

i:Vibes: As a producer, what tracks and remixes that you have done have given you the most satisfaction?

Sean Tyas: Lately this new one I have coming out on Doorn Recordings, “Seven Weeks”, gave me immense satisfaction because I really tried something I never tried before. It’s a bit slower than my usual but I wanted to still convey that SAME feeling of energy and punch that is in my normal trance stuff. When it was all done, I was really happy how it came out. This, in the end is exactly why I love producing in a studio so much. When the product is done (ok fine, when you “feel it is done”, because it’s never really done now is it?), you walk away with something you just did all on your own, looking forward to seeing the physical reaction the following weekend on the dancefloor.

i:Vibes: What records have inspired you over the years?

Sean Tyas: I’m very classic in this regard: Out of the Blue, Gouyella, 1999 (Gouryella Mix of course), Destroy She Said, Icarus, things like that.

i:Vibes: What artists and people you have met over the years you’ve been involved in dance music help and pushed you onto producing the music you do today?

Sean Tyas: Oddly I was always the black sheep kind of guy in New York. All my friends were in rock bands and more indie and emo type people, and on the dance side, not many were producing, just DJing at the time. And I found more solace sitting making music so that’s more what I went after, just reading theory books and production manuals.

i:Vibes: Not being a producer myself but sometimes thinking “that track could do with a extra beat here and kick there”, do you sometimes just stumble across a track and think “I could really make that one go boom”?

Sean Tyas: Its how I end up doing certain remixes, sure. You’ll hear a melody play, and sometimes you just wanted say a note change or chord change to just go another way, so badly, in fact, that you just want to remix the whole thing.

i:Vibes: Your ‘Rework’s’ are legendary but not all of them have been available to release. Have you any Sean Tyas specials you’ve produced just for your own pleasure or DJ sets that your particular fond off?

Sean Tyas: The ACDC little rework was cute and originally just intended for a surprise for Australia and New York gigs but it actually caught on quite a bit in 2007 and still makes for a nice surprise here and there. I probably should do some more, but frankly since 07, my Inbox has become inundated with more reworks and mashups than anything else really, so not really much left to try.

i:Vibes: A few of my personal favourite tracks have been ‘One More Night Out’ and ‘Drop’ which really have a high energy feel and deeply uplifting melodies. What are the thought and creative process you go through when creating tracks like that?

Sean Tyas: Melody first usually, I’ll flesh out the main changes and just detail them in later. Now that I actually think about it, it IS exactly like how I draw, basic skeleton and shapes first, then carve it into a detailed piece. Same with melody and all production.

i:Vibes: On the remix front you there have been a lot of Sean Tyas remixes over the past year. Your remix of Ben Gold’s ‘Life’ was truly sensational! Have you had a lot of people coming to you for requests for remixes for their tracks?

Sean Tyas: Yes, I just wish I could say yes to everyone. In fact I used to always say yes because I just didn’t know HOW to say no. Now I do though, because once you feel how it is to be so backed up, you learn how to manage your time and pick the right jobs. So my criteria for saying Yes now is simply: “Do I love this track and will I love what I think I can do with it?

Sean Tyas

i:Vibes: What new remixes can we expect to see from you in the next few months?

Sean Tyas: Just finished a couple: My remixes of Push – Interference, Signum – Second Wave, Adam Nickey – Slider, plus about 3 in the pipeline now (SEE WHAT I MEAN!)

i:Vibes: Moving into current events, this year is looking to be an exciting year for Trance music and yourself with a debut on Radio 1’s ‘Essential Mix’. How did you getting on the mix come about?

Sean Tyas: No idea, got that miraculous call from my booking agent Simon Eve saying guess what, you have got an Essential Mix to do! Goosebumps I tell ya.

i:Vibes: With the show having such a world renowned reputation for quality with only the finest DJ’s from around the world chosen to showcase their music is their that added pressure to deliver the best mix you have ever done?

Sean Tyas: Not necessarily best, but that’s certainly part of it. But what I really wanted a mix that a broader range of people would get a huge taste of what I do, without it blasting in their car, causing them to go nuts and drive off the road. Because me banging away at 143 bpm (which I’m known to get up to) may not be the most appropriate way to go, so it’s my first time I actually really attempt to do more of a bit of a journey, and I just hope it worked!

i:Vibes: Have you been saving any exclusive tracks especially for the mix?

Sean Tyas: Yes, 2 of them. One is Seven Weeks which I mentioned earlier and the other, well, only the people who have been listening to my stuff for a WHILE will understand that one.

i:Vibes: When recording a mix like this is it just a case of having your records there and putting yourself in front of the decks for two hours or do you really fine tune each mix to get it just right?

Sean Tyas: This one I had to restart twice to nail it. Cheating in a way I guess, but more important is that Radio 1 gets a good product!

i:Vibes: The Essential mix is always a great chance for producers to showcase their DJ talents and that’s something not many people will have sampled from you before. Where can we expect to find Sean Tyas performing over the next few months?

Sean Tyas: I can’t wait for the rest of this year really: good solid spots like a Russian weekend, Argentina tour, Australian Trance Energy Tour, and a slew of gigs in spots like Indonesia and China, in addition to playing Sunrise festival in Poland, and several international Global Gatherings. Daunting!

i:Vibes: Your first release of the year ‘Melbourne’ is already out and some say it’s your finest production work to date. With so many great artist releases so far is an artist album something that’s come into your thoughts for the future?

Sean Tyas:

i:Vibes:

Sean Tyas: Couldn’t be more right! Starting it in April once I finish this current batch of projects. It will be all new material and not all trance! (SHOCKING!)

Finally the Quick Fire Five:

i:Vibes: What is your current obsession?

Sean Tyas: Buying apps I never use in my iPhone.

i:Vibes: What’s the last record you listened to?

Sean Tyas: Last track I listened to (apart from whatever I was working on in studio was oddly, Rapid Eye – Circa Forever (Rapid Eye remix).

i:Vibes: Where did you last DJ?

Sean Tyas: Saturday night in Swansea, Wales at Escape.

i:Vibes: What country are you in right now?

Sean Tyas: I’m home in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

i:Vibes: Lager or Cider?

Sean Tyas: Lager!

Many thanks for taking the time to talk to i:Vibes and may we wish you all the best for what will surly be a great year for Sean Tyas music. I’m sure your essential mix will be a real belter!

You can listen to Sean's Essential Mix, which is broadcast on the 14th at 3AM GMT, over on Radio 1 and for the next seven days after broadcast listen to it again!
