The debut album from Oceanlab drew mixed opinions when it first broke wind last year but it's an album that may well have grown on you given a few plays. The remixes coming from the singles released so far have been more than up to par so its good news they are released a double disc remix album out next month...
I have got to say when Above & Beyond first broke news about a full Artist album from Oceanlab it went straight to my Pre-Order list but when I first played it my initial response was one of slight disappointment. The two tracks you may have heard slipping into a few DJ sets before the album came out will have been Sirens of The Sea and Miracle but the majority of the album was all new Oceanlab tracks that did not at first seem to have the spice of their previous releases.
The ingredients where there for the new tracks to be future classics and the remixes that came along with the singles definitely put those to good use. I'm not saying the originals were bad but just seemed to like a bit of oomph on first approach. Like a good wine though after a closer inspection it may well have warmed on you. The good news is they will be releasing a double compilation that should have you steaming hot on first impression as it features some of the finest remixes of their productions to date with new remixes of tracks you might not be that familiar with.
Sliding in amongst the Above & Beyond remixes are tracks by Andy Duguid, Gareth Emery, Oliver Smith and classic remixes of the tracks that built Oceanlab up such a good reputation. I'm talking about Ferry Corsten's remix os Clear Blue Water, the thunderous remake of Beautiful Together by Signum and an early production by Armin van Buuren with his remix of Sky Falls Down. The album looks to be UK publication Mixmag's compilation of the month for its June Issue, which is available in the 21st May.
Will it be yours? I'd not be surprised if it was as it looks to be the musical dogs bollocks with the classic remixes and new remakes.
