© Aly FilaAs they prepare for a massive gig at Germany's premier nightspot Technoclub this weekend, i:Vibes caught up with the Aly & Fila boys for a quiet word...

Aly Amr Fathalah (Aly) and Fadi Wassef Naguib (Fila), the Egyptian duo, were both born in 1981 and have known each other since kindergarten. After falling in love with the music Paul Van Dyk, Steve Helstrip and Chicane they built their first small studio and started doing electronic music and djing from 1999. After establishing themselves in Egypt they decided to go international. In 2002, they signed with the German record label, Euphonic Records. Their first release, "Eye of Horus" received huge airplay from the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, DJ Tiësto, and many others. The track was licensed to Fundamental Recordings in Holland and reached number 4 position in the Dutch Dance charts. After finishing their contract with Euphonic Records, Fila met with Andy Prinz and they decided to launch their first sublabel of Offshore. Upcoming Egyptian releases would follow. Their first release through Offshore Music Switzerland / AP Pro Audio "Spirit of Ka" made it on numerous playlists. They have played alongside Armin Van Buuren in A State of Trance episode 300 and A State of Trance episode 350. They have been voted on DJ Mag. as one of the top 100 DJs in the world twice. Ended the year 2007 as number 111 as they finally break through the top 100 djs in 2008 reaching the 31st postion on the list.

i:Vibes: Hi guys, thanks for speaking to www.technoclub.tc and i:Vibes. How are you? The way you produce reminds me of Steve Helstrip simply that you release less but of the highest quality. Is that something that makes Aly & Fila stand out?

Aly & Fila: We always believe in quality over quantity, we always try to deliver great remixes as well as originals, we want to stay in the public eye, and to keep delivering to the masses

i:Vibes: How does one normally get interested in Trance in the 90s in Egypt? How was trance in the 90s in Egypt? What DJs were coming to visit back then? I can imagine guys like Digweed, Oakinfold and Sascha! Any others?

Aly & Fila:: Well trance used to be so big in Egypt in late 90s but it went down. most of the A list DJ's played in Egypt during that time, but it's picking up again and it looks really good.

i:Vibes: You guys have been friends since Kindergarten. What has made your friendship and work relationship so strong?

Aly & Fila:: When you are best friends the trust is there from the start, that’s important, and you have a mutual understanding, and can bounce off each other with ideas and energy

i:Vibes: What were your childhoods like? When exactly did you get in love with Trance and what was the deciding moment?

Aly & Fila:: Well we started to listen to dance music when we were 15 or something like that. It was always like when someone travels abroad he gets us cds because we didn't have proper cd shops in Egypt. After listening to early Armin, PVD, Ferry, Steve Helstrip and Chicane stuff, we fell in love with Trance music and decided to produce and promote this style of music in our own vision.

i:Vibes: What was your first record bought?

Aly & Fila:: Might be Paul Van Dyk - For an Angel.

i:Vibes: Those three artists Paul van Dyk, Steve Helstrip and Chicane are also on the top of my list of favourites trance artists. Why has each one of these artists been so special too you?

Aly & Fila:: They have helped to shape dance music / trance music, their energy and their productions, trance is there to make people smile, takes you on a journey, they have had huge influences on us as have many other DJs/producers

i:Vibes: The nice guys Ralph Kyau and Steven Moebis gave you guys your first break with the track “eye of hours” being released on Euphonic. How important have those two guys been for the start of your career?

Aly & Fila:: Well during that time it was really hard to get signed. And getting signed to Euphonic at that time made us feel really proud and special because they didn't sign much artists, so we felt that we have something special to offer and it gave us a really big boost to work more.

i:Vibes: How has the sound of Aly & Fila developed in the last six years since “Eye of Horus?

Aly & Fila:: We feel that we have our own unique style, our manager calls it Egyptian trance. Driving but also melodic, as 6 years has gone by, we have learnt so much and continue to do so, the productions have changed over the course of that time

i:Vibes: How would you describe the Aly & Fila sound in 2009?

Aly & Fila:: Driving, energetic, uplifting, euphoric, trance

i:Vibes: You guys have established quite a remix resume in the last five years. Why are you guys concentrating more on remixes than own works?

Aly & Fila:: We like to try and mix and match, there is a lot of good productions out there, and we get asked quite a lot to remix, if we feel strongly about it then we will do, but its important not to do too many, we have two new forthcoming originals Khepera and Rosaires, the key is to get the balance.

i:Vibes: What is your own favourite production?

Aly & Fila:: It must be 'Lost Language'

i:Vibes: I like the “Out of the sky” remix very much. What was your inspiration behind making the remix that way?

Aly & Fila:: We feel the vocal is brilliant and stuart aka lange has done a great job on the original, as many of our friends say we ‘Aly & Fila’d it up’, bit more driving, that remix got amazing feedback

i:Vibes: One of your classic remixes is “Why”. Was this a difficult remix to make. What was the most difficult thing that you had to do to get this remix perfect?

Aly & Fila:: This was a pleasure to make, the vocal is superb in the middle and everyone sings along to it, it has everything, drive, uplifting, really like it .

i:Vibes: You guys also are talented at establishing that beautiful atmosphere. How important is getting that perfect breathtaking atmosphere in a track?

Aly & Fila:: We like to take our listeners and fans, clubbers on a journey, twists and turns and big euphoria with a drive behind it.

i:Vibes: You guys also like experimenting with vocals. What is the most difficult thing in getting a vocal number right in your eyes?

Aly & Fila:: The key is to get the vocal to fit in with the music, in line with it, so it makes it a perfect track.

i:Vibes: What are the duties of you guys in the studio? Does each guy do something particular or does it always change? What are the strengths of each guy in the studio?

Aly & Fila:: Fila (I try not to smoke a lot) but it relaxes you as you are making music, discuss ideas together, we both have our own roles but the studio secrets stay in the studio

i:Vibes: Besides The mixing of the Technoclub Vol 31, what else can we await from you in the future on releases?

Aly & Fila:: We are also mixing the Zurich Street Parade Compliation, but also we have many stuff coming up on our label Future Sound of Egypt Recordings.

i:Vibes: You guys are mixing the Technoclub Vol 31 together with Talla 2XLC. What can we await from your mix? Will there be any surprises?

Aly & Fila:: Yeah we are really pleased with the tracks on the compilation, many surprises.

i:Vibes: You guys will be making your debut in the Technoclub in June 2009. How excited are you on playing there?

Aly & Fila:: Yeah really looking forward to it, we have heard so many great things about the club, thanks to Talla for inviting us

i:Vibes: You guys were both three years old as Talla 2XLC started the Technoclub in 1984. What do you think about when you hear the word Technoclub and Talla 2XLC?

Aly & Fila:: Legendary

i:Vibes: When you were getting in love with Trance music in the 90s, what early German artists did you respect if any and why?

Aly & Fila:: Paul Van Dyk was a massive influence on us and still is, he continues to push the boundries and his drive is amazing.

i:Vibes: What can we await from your DJ set at Technoclub?

Aly & Fila:: Suprises, energy, cant wait to play there.

i:Vibes: Is “Eye of hours” a track that you usually play in your DJ sets? Will you play it at Technoclub?

Aly & Fila:: I sometimes pull a classic or two out of our own collection, that would be telling.

i:Vibes: Do you guys bring a lot of energy in your DJ sets the way Kyau & Albert do?

Aly & Fila:: For sure, my manager wonders how I haven’t fallen over yet, but the music we play give us the emotion and energy we need

i:Vibes: You guys have your own radio show Future Sound Of Egypt. What is so special about this show?

Aly & Fila:: We are very proud of being Egyptian, the history and heritage, it gives our followers in Egypt and across the world the chance to listen to our new music every week, you can catch us every Monday on DI.fm.

i:Vibes: With what artist would you like to be locked away with in the studio and why?

Aly & Fila:: There are many to mention, but we think Roger Shah would be great to work with him in the studio.

i:Vibes: What are your five alltime favourite tracks?

Aly & Fila:: There are too many but top 5:
1-Ferry Corsten - Galaxia
2-Alibi - Eternity
3-Paul Van Dyk - For an Angel
4-Rapid Eye - Circa Forever
5-Astura - Orion's Belt

i:Vibes: What are your hobbies?

Aly & Fila:: Playing soccer from time to time, Watching movies, PS3 and Nintendo Wii :)

i:Vibes: Thanks for the chat guys and see you at Technoclub!

Aly & Fila:: Can't wait to play in this legendary club and it's been sometime since we played in Germany. See you there ;)
