One of the greatest compilation series the Trance scene has ever known has been resurrected for this summer by the very empire that destroyed it in the first place. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s back to Trance Nation...
When I look back to the compilations that made me listen to the kind of music I do today one series gave me the inspiration to find out more about a genre we know today as Trance. The original Trance Nation series came out right at the boom of the style back in 1999 when Trance was massive all over the globe, even the radio was full of it. The widespread invasion gave many of today’s new producers the inspiration to do what they are doing today. The original five compilations compiled the finest Trance around at the time and were all mixed together by Ferry Corsten who is one of the biggest Trance DJ's around today which I'm sure those early compilations contributed to.
Then it all went wrong for the series. The Ministry of Sound destroyed the series with not so much Trance Nation but Cheese Nation. The release after the 2001 edition did see Ferry Corsten mixing it but the tracks were not picked by him and I'm sure he must have vomited quite a few times when putting it together. The Ministry had gone to the dark side and destroyed the reputation, credibility and driven the fans away from what was one of the greatest trance compilation series around at the time. Around that time it was not just that series they made a gash off as The Ministry of Sound were pushing out terrible compilations. They were really in a bad place and pushing out more Cheese ridden filth than a Cathedral City factory. They had a go at putting back some credibility in the series enlisting the help of Judge Jules to put together two compilations but the damage had been done and even the Judge was not on best form. The Ministry of Sound should be ashamed of what they did to the series!
Thankfully they are a different organisation to what they were back then and although they do release a few clangers the majority of MOS branded compilations in this day of age are usually pretty good. The days of extreme cheese are over I hope.
It's the perfect time to get things back to how they should be and pout the Trance Nation brand back on top of the tree again. They have signal their intention with the news of a brand new compilation simply called 'Trance Nation'. It's similar to the new Batman film, takes nothing away from the superb original but puts it in a modern light and brings the series right up to date. Trance is different to what it used to be but its still bigger than ever and getting popular by the day. They have given Anjunabeats trio Above & Beyond the job of thrusting this series back to where it belongs and I am sure with a repertoire like theirs they will do just that. Two discs packed with the latest Trance that puts today’s Trance sound fully on show. The Ministry of Sound approached the guys themselves asking to see if they would be interested in the new project and they jumped at the offer.
Ministry of Sound was keen to take the Trance Nation series back to its roots and approached us with the idea,” said Tony of Above & Beyond. “The early editions of the series were amongst the most complete records of their time, so we were keen to get involved.”
“We’ve picked the latest tracks from our favourite producers, remixers and artists to create a 160 minute mix that captures the trance scene as we see it in the summer of 2009,” he added. “As ever, our focus is on quality tunes, so we hope this CD will stand the test of time: that’s the Trance Nation legacy as we see it.”
Above & Beyond
Trance Nation is well and truly back, the new edition even goes back to the design that made the originals which had that layout up to 2001. That packaging reminds me of quality when looking at it and the same layout is back with quality returned. Lets just hope the Ministry of Sound don’t destroy it again and you never know, they might even release an Annual with decent tracks on it like they used to. This is a start though and marks the proper return of a classic Trance brand!
