One of the flagship stars of Blackhole and their Space Age Compilation series is DJ Montana, a man who has often been referred to as being DJ Tiesto's brother.. The truth behind that and also info about his compilation album due for release this week!
DJ Montana has been at the helm of Black Hole Records, one of Holland's biggest trance and techno labels, producing his own style of funky trance led techno tunes and adding his mixing skills to the compilation sets. The 25 year old producer and DJ has been one of Holland's most underrated talent, and here, he talks a bit about this and that with i:Vibes!
Hi there DJ Montana! Hope you're doing well at the moment! and first of all, I'd like to thank you on behalf of i:Vibes for doing this interview with us.
-So Montana, give the readers a bit of info about yourself then, where you're from, your interests in life, as well as your loves and hates..
Montana: Born (29-10-76) and raised in Breda (Holland) from Turkish parents, at the early age 15 I became a big fan of Public Enemy and kind of raw Hip Hop (still), thats when i started my interest in music and also strangely i'd always listened to classic music like Vivaldi, Sarasate and Tjaikovski. Still when I'm heading to some gigs I will often listen this kind of music in the car.
Loves...mmmmh I love to relax on the couch after some nice dinner and chill all night long.
Hates...mmmh I hate people who talk bullshit and crap.
-You have been closely linked to one of the top guys in the circuit right now; and some people are asking; "Is DJ Montana DJ Tiesto's younger brother?!" What do you have to say to that?!
Montana: Hahaaa I love this one, Tijs and I, we almost grew up together and we got our brotherhood vibes since that day. Some people indeed think that he is my brother, but in real real he is my 'big brother'... respect goes out!
-And more than often there are questions as to how you came to get the name DJ Montana, whats the story behind that?
Montana: In the very early days, Tijs worked in a video rental store, and we where hanging out there when he was working and one day a guy came to deliver his videos and he had rented the movie "Scarface" starring Al pacino, sudden this guy looked at me and kept staring, then he said " Damn you look the same as Montana" from that movie in a very funny way" So that evening I watched the movie and later on we had a gig/holiday in Hungary and we started making imitations of the movie.. so the rest is up to you I guess! -Your sound has sometimes been described as techno, sometimes as trance and sometimes as house. In your own eyes, how do you describe the music you produce and play?
Montana:The sound that I play is definitely techno, it doesn't matter what kind it is. Just let it jam and rumble in the clubs/festivals. If I may describe it it would be "Raw freaked up jambanging pounding house music".
-You're about to release a new compilation album to spark off the Black Hole 2002 rumble, do you have any general comments related to this release? and thoughts about it when you were compiling it?
Montana: This one is gonna be the real shit that I play at my gigs which have me booked later in the evening. It's the pure style that I play and produce and what's more beautiful than to release it on CD? It was also a bit easy when i was compiling it, cos I knew wich records jam and wich records are boring; when I looked upon the crowds at gigs I already knew which records have to be put on my compilation. But still I try to build it up to a climax..
-At the moment you've been more or less centered around Holland in terms of your gigs, such as Dance Valley and Impulz, are there any plans to diversify your gigs outside of Holland? and even outside of Europe?
Montana: I played a lot of gigs outside Holland in countries like Israel, Norway, Egypt, Panama, Greece etc. etc. And still i've got bookings like America, Turkey, Columbia and also I play in Holland, it's very nice to travel around the world, so I would love to keep that way!
-Aside from your DJing and moving onto your production work, what's to come in terms of productions for you in this year?
Montana: In late March I'm gonna release the theme that i haved made for the "Concept" party on 12" wich is gonna include remixes of Michel de Hey and the techno giant Umek. And of course the "Concept" CD wich i'm proud of as well as perhaps a Space age 6.0. i still love this series!
-Are there any DJs or producers you think particularly highly of? in terms of their style of play or productions?
Montana: Im a big fan of Rhythm Masters and also I like the works of Secret Cinema and Laidback Luke, the style that these guys make is incredibly raw, funky and also a high doses of jambanging materials. I highly respect these guys..
-Any final words of wisdom?
Montana: Don't get high on your own supply and "The world is yours" Cheers Y'all!
Thanks Montana, and best of luck from the i:Vibes for your CD and future productions / gigs!
