The very latest city break as audio documented by Markus Schulz takes on the extravagant surroundings of Las Vegas. A smooth blend of progressive grooves spread over two delightful mixes await...
If there were any doubt over the status of Markus Schulz as one of the most talented electronic dance music artists of today then this double compilation should blow those away. I've a feeling that’s what this compilation will do just that to you. It's the fifth in a series by Markus which takes upon a city theme for each volume, a little like the Global Underground compilations where the artist takes inspiration from certain places and surroundings. Las Vegas is the setting for Mr Schulz latest city tour; it’s a place that he says has undergone a bit of a revolution over the past four years and is very much a clubbing Mecca in this day of age. It's a city most would associate with extravagant architecture, gambling and the home to a smaller version of the statue of liberty. For those who have been there it will have made a lasting impression for years to come but for those who have and not sampled the city's nightlife this compilation might just put you in the mood. I don’t think you need a full biography of Markus for this review just a little explanation why this release is so good.

From a lot of other mixes and productions that I've heard from Markus he has a very progressive style when it comes to his trance. He seems to have a talent for creating a mood within his work that you rarely find with other artists. he has dug out a collection of outstanding trance and progressive records for this release with a surprising blend of styles. The two discs both have a separate feeling to them with the first being more on the progressive side with deep dark undertones and haunting melodies. The mood for the first disc is set up by a track called 'Rain' by 'Clinch', who I am not entirely sure I've heard of before. It starts with a laid back bubbling melody and when the rumbling bass line feeds in you know right from the start its going to be an enjoyable trip through the rest of the disc. You will love the retro style chord that drives though 'ElSandro - Style Fusion' which mixes it in with impacting percussion and sweet as you like atmospheric tone that builds up from the distance. There really is not a bad track on the whole of the CD with the overall feeling being very fresh. With the likes of familer names like Rex Mundi, Arnej and Phynn mixes it with a few less than familer ones, at leats to me, in Veselin Tasev, Torin Schmitt and Thomas Cresine the blend here is perfect.
Things for the second disc take on a slightly different feeling than the first. The progressive mood is still all in there but a little bit of uplift and vocal flavours are to be found in another stunning mix. The gorgeous vocal break down complimented by a sweet piano key in 'Max Graham feat. Neev Kennedy - Sun In The Winter' is truly orgasmic to the ear. The piano keys create an uplifting mood as a synth drive starts to come through built-up by a rolling beat. One of my favourite tracks from the whole disc that’s for certain and one of the best tracks I've heard from Max Graham for a while. Another highlight from the second disc is a tidy progressive number from 'Mr. Pit' in 'This Room Is Not Big Enough'. The build and lead for this makes the bright, refreshing melody that comes in with the break. A scorching bass driven rock style chord takes the lead with the beat and kicks with the melody using a brightly flavoured synth to create an uplifting melody to die for. It's one of those tracks that cuts off the uplifting melody and bangs back into the ruimbling percussion but does it without ruining the flow or mood. The progressive smooth mood that starts the second disc soon turns into a more agressive banging affair as the mix goes on. That's the difference with the second disc, things get all that little bit more thumping but smooth melodies and deep vocal harmonics maintain the mood the mix first gives you.
There are so many good tracks on this compilation I'd be boring you to death describing them all to you. It's one of the best compilations that I have heard so far this year, if not the best. The atmopsheric moods created over the two discs with a mixture of progressive, tech and vocal trance fused together on each disc really take you on a journey. You may think markus is all about the progressive stuff but have a deep listen to this and you will find ear bending melodies that are far from progressive. 'Ummet Ozcan - Next Phase' is another favourite from this compilation with an effect driven female vocal chopped up and a tech style melody that blows you away.
Conclusion:
This is what trance is all about and although Las Vegas may be the theme the place this two disc compilation puts you in is a different world. Not a fault to pick with this, smooth, progressive, uplifting and aggressive in parts Markus has blended together an outstanding array of tracks for two discs of orgasmic audio you really should hear. Two discs with very distinctive flavours but one overall impression. Bloody good music! This is a CD that will leave a good taste in your mouth.
