© Provided by HamelBill Hamel, the master behind Sunkissed & Teknology Records and the Miami trance brigade, also part of the collaboration team with Simon Noble under Mezz, talks to i:Vibes about West Coast Trance, Progressive, and his comments on WMC.

i:Vibes gets hold of Florida resident Bill Hamel briefly at this busy time with his upcoming productions on Sunkissed and numerous gigs around the US. With his productions under Hamel, Mezz and numerous other guises on his Sunkissed label, Bill Hamel is and has been at the forefront of the US dance scene for much of the last few years along with west coast DJs and producers such as Sandra Collins and Christopher Lawrence

Anyway, just to start it off, tell us a bit about how you got into the whole scene?

Bill: To make a long story short, I fell in love with house music in 1994 when I moved to Orlando to attend college. At that time, Sasha was just starting to come to Orlando on a regular basis. Hearing Sasha & Digweed live, and following their climb up the ladder made me realize this is what I wanted to do.

You've been in the US circuit for a quite a while now, gracing the industry your productions with Simon Noble under Mezz and your own Label Sunkissed. How does it feel to produce and run the label at the same time?

Bill: I like it a lot! It gives me the artistic freedom to know that whatever’s produced here will be released; As long as I deem it to be release worthy. I know a lot of artists that have their tracks put on the back shelf because some A&R guy thinks the tracks are not strong enough to be released, but here its different.

The US Trance style of music still verges on a more progressive fuelled tip, unlike the diverse styles which seem to float around Europe, ranging from tech trance to vocal trance to deep progressive. Are there plans for you to change your production style a bit to move more into Europe or Asia?

Bill: More people are familiar with me and my labels in Europe than here in the states, with 85% of our sales based in Europe and elsewhere. But I’d say that the US ears are starting to become more accustomed to the progressive sound which has been big in Europe and other parts of the world. With this in mind, I’d never change my production style to fit in to anywhere and I just write music that reflects whatever sound I’m in to at that given point.

With a new year, we often seen changes in music style around the world, what do you see as being the sound of 2002 both in the Americas as well as around the world?

Bill: I’d say the tribal influences that are very popular in progressive house now are starting to wear thin. I’m really vibeing now to a lot of US West Coast house producers which are breaking out throughout the scene at the moment with the smoother sound.

Its coming up to the end of March now, and WMC is looming pretty soon.. any surprises we'll expect from you or the label? And do you hope to see anyone out there this year?

Bill: Not Really... I’m not going to be here this year, and I didn’t go last year. When you live in Florida, going to Miami’s not that big of a deal. Besides, all of the parties are too crowded any way.

Who would you like to work with in the upcoming future.. in terms of producers, vocalists or djs?

Bill: I'm a big fan of BT and it would be great to work with Brian in the near future

We thank Bill Hamel for his time and wishes him best of luck during 2002 and beyond.

Bill has just released his latest compilation CD with news which can be found at Bill Hamel Compilation Info
