With the return of Breathe Music we caught up with Jens Lonnberg who is the musical brains behind the first release on the label for just over a year...
There have been some sensational talents to come from the Scandinavian countries over the years, especially on the electronic dance music circuit. We have another one here for you to get know in the form of Swede Jens Lonnberg. He has had a few releases under his belt, 'Breaking The Ice' came out on Solarstone's 'Insatiable Records', which is now 'solarSwarm', and went down very well with dance community. Solarstone even produced a remix himself for the release. That track came out under his Pamuya alias for which he has had two releases so far, the other being a 'Pamuya EP' on Alter Ego. He is a new name that’s for sure but one that the recently re-launched Breathe Music guys have put faith in to debut their first single release in well over a year. It's about time we got to know this talented Swede with the full i:Vibes interrogation.
i:Vibes: Jens thanks for talking to i:Vibes.nu. You are from Sweden. How did you get involved with electronic music?
Jens: Hi, thanks for having me, it is a privilege to be interviewed by i:Vibes. Yes I’m from Sweden. I got involved with electronic music because I’ve always been fascinated by it. My dad bought me my first synthesizers when I was about 15 years old.
i:Vibes: What was your childhood like? What was your earliest memory with electronic music?
Jens: I had a great childhood. I grew up in a small town outside Gothenburg with my parents and my older brother. My earliest memory of electronic music must have been hearing artists like Kraftwerk and Koto. I was very fascinated with the way they could create such beautiful soundscapes using only synthesizers.
i:Vibes: Who were your early musical inspirations?
Jens: The earliest inspirations was the artists I mentioned above. Later i started discovering many other different genres of electronic music. Some of the early artists I listened a lot to are: Prodigy, The Future Sound of London, Aphex Twin, Moby, Massive Attack to name a few.
i:Vibes: What was it like growing up in Sweden in a house and techno culture
Jens: It was great. Like I said I grew up in a small town and not many people were in to electronic music, but on the other hand I lived close to Gothenburg which was great. We use to go there on weekends shopping records and partying.
i:Vibes: You started producing music as Pamuya. What does this name mean and why did you call yourself this?
Jens: The name Pamuya means water moon. Its a native American name which I thought was very beautiful. I think Native Americans are a fascinating people with an interesting culture as well. I guess that’s why I choice the name.
i:Vibes: How would describe the Pamuya sound?
Jens: I would describe it as emotions reflected from me.. sometimes its hard pounding and sometimes very chilled emotional sound.I like to have variation in my music and not get stuck in the same pattern.
i:Vibes: How happy have you been with your steady rise the last two years? What has been your best memory in this time in terms of getting your music more established?
Jens: I’m very happy about it.. its nice to get such great response from people all over the world. This gives me more energy and drive to evolve as a producer. The best memory must have been when Paul van Dyk played my Antarctica track on his Vonyc show the first time. I really admire and respected him a lot.
i:Vibes: Solarstone released “Breaking the ice” on Insatiable records. Do you remember how you found about this great news?
Jens: I was excited to hear he wanted to release it. It was through my friend Ron Verboom i got in touch with Rich from Solarstone. He had made a remix of the track and helped me to find a label to release it on.
i:Vibes: “Breaking the ice” is a beautiful track. What was your inspiration behind this track?
Jens: I listened a lot to Inpetto when I made that track. I wanted to catch their type of sound I think. I don’t remember so clearly from when I produced it.. to long ago.
i:Vibes: How important is creating the prefect bassline in your tracks? On Antartica, you have a well defined bassline that brings back memories to Deadmaus.
Jens: The bassline is always important. Its can be quite time consuming before you manage to get it right. Antarctica has a fairly simple bassline but blends in very smoothly with the hole production.
i:Vibes: Lucid State is another fascinating track. Was this a track that was difficult to produce? What was the most important thing you had to get right on this track so it sounded perfect for you.
Jens: I like the Lucid State track as well.. Its still unreleased but its planed to be released sometime in May on Afterglow records. I had some difficulty in the production of it.. I wanted to make something different than what I’ve done before. The most imported thing to get right on it was the final mixing of the tune and making the track interesting.
i:Vibes: You released Last Breath on the German label Breathemusic. How did this cooperation come about?
Jens: I send Timo a demo version of the song. He immediately like it and gave me some pointers how to make it better. I did some additional changes to it and it turned out very well. I really enjoyed working with them. They are very professional and great to work with. Hopefully I get to release more stuff on their label.
i:Vibes: The feedback has been great from the DJs. Paul van Dyk played it in his set. What makes this track so unique?
Jens: Yeah the feedback has been amazing. The thing that stands out most I think is the groove of the basic arrangement and the melodic atmosphere.
i:Vibes: Last Breath is a very catchy track. What was your inspiration behind the track in the studio?
Jens: I wanted to make something with a Chicane type of groove. That was the original idea.
i:Vibes: The atmosphere and break are very nice. How important is the atmosphere in a track for you?
Jens: In this particular track it was very important to have a atmosphere feel in it .. Most of my tracks has atmosphere elements in them, but not all. Sometimes its great to just have the focus on the beat and play around with sounds without a lot of effects on it.
i:Vibes: What other releases can we await from you in the future?
Jens: I have a couple of new ones coming out soon.. I single on Alterego called "Liquid Sky" is coming out 24 of May and "Lucid state" is out on Afterglow sometime in May as well.
i:Vibes: How do you go about producing a track in the studio? Do you have a special formula or is it different each time?
Jens: It’s quite different each time. I don’t have a special formula. Sometime I start off with a drumbeat and sometimes I start with a bassline and melody.
i:Vibes: What is your most prized possession in the studio?
Jens: That must be my computer.. without my computer I’m lost.
i:Vibes: What is your opinion of the German trance scene? What artists do you like?
Jens: There are some very talented artists that hail from Germany. I like artist like Paul van Dyk, Cosmic Gate, Talla 2XLC, Sean Tyas, Roger Shah, Markus Schulz.
i:Vibes: With what producer would you like to be locked away with in the studio for 24 hours?
Jens: It's difficult to choose only one. I really like the sound of Andy Duguid. It would have been great to spend some time with him in the studio.
i:Vibes: What are your five current favourite tracks?
Jens: Bart Claessen - Elf (2001 Returning Mix) Mat Zo - The Lost (Original Mix) Cosmic Gate - Barra Beltek - Running backwards Arnej - They Need Us (Original mix)
i:Vibes: What are your five all-time favourite tracks?
Jens: Chicane - Offshore Arksun - Arisen (Original Mix) Paul Van Dyk- For An Angel Veracocha- Carte Blanche Solarstone 'Seven Cities' (Original Mix)
i:Vibes: What are your hobbies?
Jens: Music, movies, travelling. During the winter I enjoy skiing a lot.
i:Vibes: Thanks Jens for the chat! Good luck with your music!
Jens: Thanks for talking to me. Take care!
