© BobinaAs he warms things up for this summer with the release of his latest edition of 'Russia Goes Clubbing' we thought it was the perfect time to catch up with the series architect, Bobina...

Bobina has fast become the biggest Trance artist in the whole of Russia in recent years backed up by his high ranking last year's DJ Mag Top 100 coming in at number 16. His last artist album 'Again' was magnificent in every shape possible and the remix edition added more life to an already energetic LP. His first major release of the year has just come about with the superb mix compilation 'Russia Goes Clubbing.' which brings together Bobina's favourite records mixed up into one flawless DJ mix. It’s a series named after his increasingly popular radio show broadcast each Wednesday through DFM and circulated through numerous other radio outlets worldwide. We have not had a catch up him since the early part of last year so the time is perfect to see what’s new in the world of Bobina.

i:Vibes: It’s a pleasure to have you on the site again Bobina, a lot has been happening since we had you on the site back in 2009. First things first, your debut album of last year was one of the best and one you must be very proud of?

Bobina: Hey – actually if you mean “Again” – that was 3rd album! I remember that time I was quite happy with the result – the most important it includes electronic music which I liked at that moment, so I had a lot of fun to produce it. Fun is the most important thing – for me its always like this!

i:Vibes: The remix edition was a pleasure to hear with new takes on your original masterpieces. Did you hand pick the artists for the album?

Bobina: Mostly yes – I just chose the remixers myself. As I know most of them in person for quite a long time – it was not that difficult to sort that album.

i:Vibes: What mixes for you impressed you most from ‘Again Remixed’?

Bobina: Oh I really can’t tell you mate. I know for sure that the most popular was Ferry Corsten’s remix of Invisible Touch but for me personally it’s hard to choose which of the remixes was better. I still play most of them in clubs by the way!

i:Vibes: After the huge success from both albums it must drive you into thinking about the next, any plans for one at the moment?

Bobina: I producing the new album at the moment – no exact release date but I think I’ll make it in 2011. At least people heard already the 1st single from it – “Angel of the North”!

i:Vibes: You have a new single out ‘Angel of The North’ with the superb vocals of Sabrina. What was it like working with her in the studio?

Bobina: She has a really nice voice and the most important it sounds fresh for me personally. The tune itself sounds very summerish for me, goes well on all Russian Major FM radios tations and you’ll have a chance to see official music video at least on www.bobina.tv very soon. We’re working on it now!

i:Vibes: The remixes are not out and about yet but who is in the pipeline to inject their production venom for the new single?

Bobina: I already have asked few people which sound I love at the moment to work on the remixes. Sorry I can’t tell you the names yet as the mixes are far not finished. But you know these guys.

i:Vibes: The new single is featured on your brand new completion ‘Russia Goes Clubbing’ , which is one smoking hot mix from start to finish I must say. It’s a compilation series that has been running for some time now. What was the inspiration for the 2010 edition?

Bobina: Yeah Russia Goes Clubbing is the name of my weekly radio show here in Russia and also I release yearly CD’s. Basically all the RGC CD’s (and this one as well) I do for car listening. 2010 CD is more trancey than 2009 in my opinion but still not bad for a car collection.

i:Vibes: What is the clubbing scene like in Russia as it has brought us notable names like PPK and in recent years the exciting new talent Alexander Popov to the trance scene?

Bobina: Well I think PPK were the first breakthrough from Russia so the guys inspired many trance producers here. I know them well, honestly never was a big fan of their ‘one-hit-wonder’ “ResuRection” but still think that its really amazing they scored Top3 in the UK. First of all they showed Russians that impossible is possible, you know. As for nowadays – Alexander Popov is really doing well you are right. Plus Russia has Ilya Soloviev, Arty, Anton Firtich, Poshout, Proff – Moonbeam are also Russians: really a lot of talented producers here. And I’m sure they can really do well as soon as they’ll be able to find the right management – that’s important.

i:Vibes: With any compilation everybody has their favourites, what tracks for you have you a special regard for from the album?

Bobina: I really in love with Pandora record from Ali Wilson – amazing stuff this guy produce. Plus This Room is Not Big Enough by Mr. Sam really works for me. Actually I like all the tunes but named few club bombs – both tunes really blow the roof of any club I play nowadays.

i:Vibes: There are a lot of new talents on the album like DJ Eco, Skytech and an outstanding uplifting record from Right Face. Who for you have been standing out as the new hottest trance talents in recent months?

Bobina: As for my personal taste – men of the moment are Ali Wilson and Heatbeat. As for uplifting trance – I’m not really play much of such style nowadays but Right Face as you mentioned is really makes me jump every time I hear it and the tune itself is perfect for the end of CD.

i:Vibes: What’s the process for putting together a compilation disc to give it that Bobina edge?

Bobina: Nothing really special – I just select the tunes which I like – then think how to mix them (key, bpm , atmosphere etc) – and then I mix a CD. That’s really not that long process for me. Of course I can now tell you a beautiful story about mixing it on the beach of Los Angeles for example – but I prefer to tell the truth.

i:Vibes: The album goes by the name of your very own Radio show, which is broadcast thought over 50 stations worldwide and fast become one of Russia’s essential weekly trance music stops. How do you go about compiling the show each week?

Bobina: Oh yes – that’s really difficult for me. I mean I spend such a lot of time every week to select records and prepare the radio show. Its on Wednesday so if I’m in Moscow I always prefer to do it live in DFM studio. Its actually much more fun to do the radio show live rather then record it. But if I’m in USA for example, or in South Africa – I do a recording of my voice – and that is the thing I honestly do not enjoy that much. Back in the days I always did live radio show so when you always did live in the past – its really complicated to record the show in the hotel for example – completely different feeling – sometimes you really don’t know what to say. I’m sure you know what I mean.

i:Vibes: You’re due to headline the huge Global Gathering festival in your home country of Russia this year. You must be looking forward to this immensely and it must be a great privilege to headline the event?

Bobina: It’s a great event – I also played there last year so really looking forward to do it again. I had not the best experience last time – as my bag with passport and international passport was stolen from the artist room after my set. That was a crazy but long story how we found the guy on Russian version of Facebook. So this year I will be much more careful.

i:Vibes: You have also played down in South Africa at the H20 festival this year, what was that like?

Bobina: From 1st look it reminded me Kazantip a little. Big open-air event with fireworks etc. But if you never been to Kazantip – you could check Armin’s Gaia ‘Tuvan’ video which was shot there. So H20 its kind of the same but bigger but the crowd is more open-minded! If you go to www.bobina.tv btw you can find there full episode from South Africa!

i:Vibes: Were you surprised to see the huge dance music following over there as it’s not a country most noted for its electronic scene?

Bobina: Well yeah I was surprised but I heard a lot about the event before to be honest. People told me that’s good – that’s why we decided to make full Bobina TV episode about it. But I didn’t expected it will be THAT good!

i:Vibes: Your tour diary on Bobina TV from down in Africa is an engrossing watch to what DJs get up to when out and about on the road. What are your favourite memories from the tour, apart from nearly getting eaten by a baby tiger cub?

Bobina: That’s shot with baby tiger makes this video in my opinion! Everybody mentioned this moment. Johannesburg is the city with really high contrast. A lot of rich people and a lot of really poor people! Actually all my memories were included to www.bobina.tv honestly.

i:Vibes: What can we expect next on Bobina TV, maybe a special message to our readers here on i:Vibes?

Bobina: We always try to make episodes interesting and that’s why there is not too many scenes from the clubs. Main market for Bobina.tv is still Russia I think – and I want to make the videos interesting to watch not only for dance related people. The main target is to show the countries, the people, the atmosphere – but not me playing! Maybe for somebody it sounds strange but for me it always looks boring when I see a video of a deejay who plays the record. The next Bobina TV is going to be from USA again. And maybe someday I’ll make a special message to your readers, why not?

i:Vibes: After your success at being voted number 16 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 last year you are well on the way to establishing yourself as one of the most internationally recognised trance faces on the scene, not just Russia biggest. Where in the world would you like play that you have not already?

Bobina: Hm.. I think I would like to play in some Asian countries – especially Japan. Plus I want to do Brazil, Mexico as soon as possible. Actually there are a lot of countries I’ve never been yet.

i:Vibes: As an artist, DJ and producer do rankings in DJ Poll’s really mean much?

Bobina: I personally think it’s a bonus. The main thing is still: your DJ skills, your own music and your management. So the DJ Poll will work for you only if you will use it right.

i:Vibes: You’ve definitely put Russian on the map for trance, what can we expect coming up in the near future from Bobina?

Bobina: Thank you. Well – first of all release of “Angel of the North” single – if the readers haven’t heard it yet – please go to myspace.com/bobinamusic . Please also let me know what do you think about it – on < b>twitter.com/bobinamusic for example! Also I have few interesting remixes in my plan, and then album in 2011.

Finally we like to round off with what we call the i:Vibes quick five:

i:Vibes: What’s your favourite animal?

Bobina: A dog.

i:Vibes: Who last bought you a drink?

Bobina: If I tell you – my girlfriend will read this and shoot me! She can! :)

i:Vibes: What is one of your favourite sports?

Bobina: Football, Hockey, Tennis.

i:Vibes: Name one of your favourite records at the moment?

Bobina: Roxette – Crash! Boom! Bang!!! haha

i:Vibes: Where are you next DJ’in?

Bobina: Krasnoyarsk, Russia

i:Vibes: Many thanks for taking the time to speak to us Bobina, we really love the new album and very sure everyone else will take as much pleasure hearing it as we did! All the very best for this summer!

Bobina: Hey no worries – anytime! Thanks for interesting questions and of course thanks people for reading this – hope it wasn’t that boring! Speak soon!
