A classic collaboration from Darren Tate and one third of Above & Beyond's Jono Grant gets the full 2010 remix treatment with a new mix from Darren Tate and a new vocal. You should all know the original but how do these new mixes stack up? Find out...
For the start of a new decade Darren Tate has had look back to the previous one gone and injected new life into a classic that helped build him the reputation he has today. He was not along in this musical creation and had the help of Jono Grant in producing the superb ‘Let The Light Shine In’. You know Jono right? He’s one third of Above & Beyond and just look at the success they have had over the past few years. This new update may not have had Jono in the studio but it did Darren. You can rest assured he would not do anything to destroy the feeling from the original as he is truly a class act when it comes to dance music. His own discography is proof to that statement. The new mixes then, Darren is not along with his new update as he has been joined by Arty, Filo & Peri, Amrk White and fellow Mondo friend Corderoy. The Filo & Peri mix has been slipping in Armin van Buuren’s sets for well over a year now as they gave it to him as a bootleg late 2008, early 2009. This marks the 85th release for Mondo, a label who Darren and his team have pushed to become one of the best on the scene.

The second coming of 'Let The Light Shine In' packed more of a punch that the original did in terms of remixes. You have five in total but it looks like more if you glance at the track list above. The reason being is there is a female vocal put to use for the 2010 edition. What I will say about the vocal is, for me, it doesn’t really work. It doesn’t sound out of place but in the midst of that explosive main melody through all the mixes the vocal versions just sound a bit cheap. So then, you might think I'm not keen on this new update to an all time classic of mine? No true in the slightest as the dub mixes are where the sweet spot is out. Darren Tate’s kick off gets the pulse racing with excitement using his trademark sound and progressive intro. The beat is deep and packs a proper thud, especially when it drums up to sneak you a piece of the melody that will be unloaded later in the record. The harmonic feel to the tune is true to its original but updated with the tone of the synths and keys. He really sweeps away the sound to create an awesome atmosphere when the drops that moody melody. It’s one that builds, builds and builds some more, masterly layered and explodes into a true epic! You don’t need a vocal when you have a sound like this!
The remixes then, you can just about leave the vocal versions in the corner to gather dust as the dub’s are all you need for these. Corderoy’s mix I was very impressed with as he’s dropped an aggressive edge into it with some rattling percussion on the build up. His breakdown at first is a striking contrast as it drops into a sublime emotional build with the key notes rising from the rear and atmospheric sounds coming from the distance right to the forefront. He also drops in the original male vocal on the breakdown when it builds up, which for me was an epic touch and reminded you of the power the original had when it muttered the words ‘let the Light Shine In’.Arty’s mix takes things a little bit more down tempo and shifts the mood from a banging euphoric uplift to a sweet housey style melodic gem. His keys in here are mesmerising with a gentle touch on the piano to drive an uplifting mood throughout the whole mix. It’s one of the mixes to break away from the original’s pattern and sweep a more classical note into the whole feel. It’s mixes like this that really highlight what a huge talent Arty is.
You don’t need any pointers to highlight what a talent Filo & Peri are. They go with the banging uplifting approach to their remix and get a big thumps up for their efforts. The opening lead is a full of energy with pulsating pads, popping hi hats and kicks and rolling synth’s that takes the melody and pinches a different sound to it. They know how to build up the mood on the intro and they do with pure class for this mix. Leading with a sweeping note for the breakdown to drop they build in the uplifting feel and start to notch it up with the melody that breaks with huge impact. With it being the shorted mix in length it’s not long before you arrive at it either. They layer it up superbly and when things settle down and it breaks off into the main track again it does so leaving your head in euphoric overload. Super mix!
Mark White is not a name I’m overly familiar with if I’m strictly honest and it’s his mix that’s left after all the joys of the ones before it. No dub on this one, so for me the vocal overpowers the music’s too much for my liking. That’s a shame as he’s dropped in a delicate piano key on the breakdown. You can’t really tell if this is euphoric of not but things are kept simple and minimal with not much depth to it. I think its solid mix but not one that struck any impact on my ears.
Conclusion:
A very welcome update to one of my favourite records from Darren and he's done it no harm with his new remix, pushing his trademark sound fully into his 2010 mix. The vocal doesn’t really need to be there, it’s a little like when they re-released 4 Strings 'Take Me Away' and put a vocal on it, you just wondered why? Don’t worry about that because there are dubs, and they are bloody good! Check this one out!
