Marcel Woods returns to the compilation scene with another helping of Musical Madness. Blending together an undefined genre of electronic masterpieces this is an album truly without boundaries...
Marcel Woods is far from a newcomer on the electronic dance music scene having been pumping out his own unique style since the latter parts of the nineties. His early hits set him to where he is today as one of the biggest artists on the scene. Productions that I would note as ones that have driven him to great success would be 'Time Is Running Out', released back in 2003, 'Advanced', released in 2005 and more recently 'Inside Me'.The latter you can hear on this very compilation as it kicks off the first disc. Onto his new compilation then and if its trance with a diverse injection of other styles and flavors you just can't define your after then look no further. This is the second edition of Musical Madness that Marcel has released and although my memory of the original is not great I can tell you that number two certainly is. Don't be put off by Marcel's poker face artwork, this compilation won't be biting you but it will get the ears immensely stimulated for two hours.

I think one of the great things about Marcel Woods is that you cannot really put him into any particular pigeon hole of sound, not that he wants you two anyway as he's an artist who does not liked to be categorized. If I were to describe the sound for Marcel I would tag it into the tech driven trance bracket with everything in between techno and house somehow stirred into the mix. The first disc is an example of this and it starts off with Marcel's very own new single 'Inside Me', well I say new but one of his new ones as this one has been out for a few months. Strangely though he goes with Ricky T's remix and not his own. It's a choice that sits well when you get deeper into the mix. The split between a slight depressive atmosphere with the male vocal and swirling guitar is met by a deeply inviting tech fused beat and percussion. The opening few tracks on the first disc have been very well placed by Marcel, each flowing into the next with pure delight and more male vocal action is with us by the third track in by Alex Cole & Dino Barretta. Things get pushed up into a minimalisic funky vibe with the exceptional beat pattern in Koen Groeneveld with aquatic drops and dark bars. It's full of ups and down the whole mix through as the next track after that drops a scathingly addictive rolling chord that just gets the ears jumping with joy.
The first disc is progressive in parts, techy in others, engrossing with deep and moody synths that get the emotional senses all over the place. If you thought Marcel was just a trance artist then this compilation will certainly give you an education. My highlights from the first disc aside from the ones mention above would be Daniel Portman's remix of Plastic Angel's 'Try Walking In My World'. He's put an edge that you would not normal find with most Plastic Angel productions.
The second disc is just as inviting to the ears as the first. You will know plenty of the names on there like Ali Wilson, Marco V, D-Mad and Svensen & Gielen. Sadly not a new tune by the pair, as they split a few years ago, but a new remix by Jonas Stenberg & W&W. Marcel has put a different feeling to the second disc with less of a dark techno flavor and more an impacting up beat epic synthesize driven feeling. That uplifting feeling is certainly in the new mix of a Svensen & Gielen classic. Marcel himself adds some injected aggression with his own track 'Everything', a record that jumps on an effected repeated vocal hook but leads with an atmospheric chord that drops in a impacting synth driven chord. It's one of those tracks with a hint of uplifting quality on it but a dark moody build that gets you hooked onto it in the first place. If you were expecting more of the same with the second mix, Marcel has once again mashed things up. There is not need to slide his style into any firm category, if its good music, Marcel will play it, mix it and produce it. Need some evidence, look no further than this taste of his Muscial madness.
Conclusion:
If you have yet to give Marcel Woods a chance to impress you over the past few months then this is the perfect way to start. A mix compilation with no firm style definition but a blend of trance, house and techno slotted together intelligently. Two clear styles of sound from one disc to the next, which is something I like with compilations, but one firm outcome. That is an exceptional mix from start to finish which will delight even the grumpiest electronic music enthusiast. Top marks for Marcel, his madness does bring us some very good music!
