One of the upcoming female producers and DJs from Germany is Miss JMA, a name which fits into the techno scene as well as the trance one, with her productions ranging from the bouncing euro track "Spring 2000" and "Spring 2001" to the deeper darker dubbier "Halbstark" and "All Bitches". Here she speaks to i:Vibes about her past, present and future!
Miss JMA, the producer behind "Spring", "All Bitches", and "Halbstark", and friends with the Lightforce crew, as well as being a prolific DJ at events such as the Love Parade and X-Palace is here to talk to i:Vibes about what she's up to!
Hi there Miss JMA, thanks for doing this interview with i:Vibes, first of all, can you tell us abit about yourself? where you're from, your interests and dislikes.
Miss JMA: Hi there too! I come from Hannover, Germany, I'm 25 years old so i am going straight to 30 ;-).
I started DJing 2 years ago because of some influence from a friend of mine (he is one of the Lightforce producers). My first single was released in January 2001 with 2 tracks; "Spring" and Halbstark" this was my breakthrough so to speak as a DJ/act. Trom there i played at numerous party/clubs around Europe! My second single was released with a big delay because of some problems with my old label...The actual single "All Bitches" has been released on Fairlight Records/Edel - my new homebase!
I like music, my cats & dogs and my friends. I dislike envious people, bad food, and German folkmusic ;-)
Nice one! How do you describe that you play and produce as it seems to be quite diverse ranging from what some would call Trance (Such as your production of Spring), whereas some would call Techno (As like what you played at your latest DJ Set and your production Halbstark)
Miss JMA: OK, well my DJ sets have always depended on the location I am playing. If the crowed requires me to play "the hard" stuff, i let them rock! otherwise when i am playing at a big commercial event/disco i give them the commercial/trance tracks! All in all, being a DJ in my opinion is to be an entertainer! So I always try to entertain the crowd ;-) its all about having fun ;-)
About productions. "Spring" was, lets say, a track which was different! I liked the theme! The kind of music I prefer sounds more like Halbstark and "All Bitches"...I dont really like this poppy dance/trance shit !! but thats just my opinion for now....lets see where the future take me to....
So I guess you're not much of a fan of the dutch or UK trance sound? =p Your position as a DJ and a producer has been concentrated mainly around the German and European scene delivering your sound to places as local as HR-XXL, through to various gigs in Switzerland and others, where has been the most memorable place you have played at, and are there plans for you to play out in USA and Asia anytime soon?
Miss JMA: You mean my hottest party ever?....hmmm let me think.....I don't remember the name of the club, but it was somewhere in Estonia...very cool!! i was "a bit" drunk and standing "on" the turntables doing the mc......very crazy!!! USA and Asia...yes that would be nice, but I dont have any plans yet! I am available for bookings worldwide thought!...so it only depends on the club owners there I guess!
Germany is one of the places where trance and techno was developed first, with influences from Sven Vath, Cosmic Baby, Paul van Dyk and the massive nights at Dorian Gray and Tresor. How have you seen the German scene evolve through the 90s, and evolving in 2002 and beyond? And how will your own sound develop for the next few years
Miss JMA: The whole techno scene and thing has become something really huge. Today, for me, it isn't just a kind of music...its a lot more. It's become a form of living, it is a lifestyle and for some, it is a religion!!! It's something that begun in small cellars and has grown up to something really huge....I love it!!! techno will never die...and I am very excited about how it will grow and transform itself (like it did in the past) and in the future! I will keep on doing my thing! and for me, making music/creating sounds always depend on outside influences....I give what I take!
In terms of DJs and Producers, everyone has their favorites. Who are your favorites in terms of producing and DJing around the world? And What Favorite Tunes have you got?
Miss JMA: I like Mauro Picotto, Hennes & Cold and also Timo Maas as producers! my favorite DJs are: DJ Bossi (Cosmic Gate), Woody van Eyden and Ferry Corsten!!
Alltime favorite track is: Drax - Amphetamine
and my current favorite tune is: DJ Isaac - On the Edge
Ferry Corsten is a bit of a surprise there! He has been one of the most affluential producers and DJs this year and also for most of 2000-1. What do you think of the uplifting style he produces and the dutch trance sound?
Miss JMA: Well, i like his sound because it is difference to most of the other dutch trance producers / DJs. He is just different to all the other stuff!!!
In terms of your productions, what is set to be released during 2002 for you? Any new collaborations with artists or remixes?
Miss JMA: What's coming up.... well, of course a new single which we have not produced yet! My last remix was "Montini Experience - My House is Your House 2002" which also was remixed by Timo Maas and Gary D.! More remixes are coming....
What else would you like to add to this interview?
Miss JMA: Well, first of all, check out my website: www.miss-jma.de !! then, big kiss to all you out there enjoying my music....
--greets! Miss Jma
