It's been a breakthrough year for Irish Trance export John O'Callaghan with the launch of his 'Subculture' label and he's not done with 2010 just yet as he brings the second edition of his 'Subculture' mix series...

What a year it’s been for John O'Callaghan. The success of one of Ireland's many Trance exports has excelled over the past twelve months and his statue amongst the A’list level of DJ's has grown taller as he continues to impress with his pumping DJ sets and singles. Last year, he came of age as an artist with his second album release. It was a proper album in all respects, not just a collection of his hits so far which his first album was. Not to say his first wasn’t a good one though; as the tracks featured on ‘Lower The Tone’ were what made people like Paul van Dyk, John Askew and Judge Jules take notice of this talented gentleman’s skills with production equipment.
His second artist album ‘Never Fade Away’ is a superb album from start to finish with a mixture of the pounding Trance you expect to hear from John mixed in with blissfully chilled out pieces of audio artwork. He’s mixed in a few uplifting vocal ones like ‘Big Sky’ and ‘Find Yourself’ with instrumental epics ‘Broken’ and ‘Megalithic’. You cannot question his skills as an artist after such a clear demonstration of how good he is at producing great Trance after an album like that. It’s not just his skills as a producer that has got him noticed over the years; it’s also his energetic and uplifting DJ style.

The whole push for his now rubberstamped ‘Subculture’ brand all started with a compilation released around this time last year. For me, it was one of the finest compilations I had the pleasure of hearing towards the end of last year and one that’s still put into circulation on the CD player now. I’ve a feeling it may be taken out because he’s about to drop the second in the series next week. He had a hard time selecting tracks to spread over the two discs for the first one, not due to the lack of tunes but just the shear amount of good ones. It must have been twice as bad this time around with such an injection of new music, especially Trance, over the course of this year.

He’s done it though and this is the sound of Subculture 2010. Two discs full of pounding melodic Trance as only John knows best. Like it hard and fast? Then, Subculture 2010 is just what you need. If John’s music was an old VHS porn film, it would set your tape player a blaze! This album will sure set your ears a blaze with utter euphoria for sure. Tracks from Sophie Sugar, John Askew, Adam Foley, Tom Colontonio, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Activa, Nick Sentience and Gareth Emery are just athe tip of the iceberg of the electronic talent feature on the new compilation. With many a new pretender to the new Trance lord of Ireland, and there are quite a few putting up there case, they will have a job overthrowing who is surely the master, John O’Callaghan.
