Straight from the archives comes an all time classic from Ferry Corsten under an old alias called 'Eon'. He's handed the task of breathing new energy his timeless original to Juventa and his producer of the year, Rafael Frost...
It's quite timely that Ferry should see fit to release this long forgotten gem once more, especially as last week while flicking through the old 12" trance EP's I came across the original pressing on Tusunami recordings. Maybe it was a premonition as this week this dropped into the promo box and went straight to the top of the playlist. The original was released way back in 2002 and I can remember him dropping this inside the Ibiza wall’s of Eden and setting the place alight. For this new incarnation of an alias that only saw the one release he has handed the remixes duties over to the immensely talented rising trance star Juventa and Rafeal Frost. The latter that has had one hit after the other on Flashover and has been one of the most productive producer’s in recent years. It’s not to surprising that Ferry has chosen Rafael as his ‘Producer of the year’ for 2010. Just the name of this epic old track should raise the eyebrow of even the most casual trance enthusiast if you remember the original’s pumping energy.
:: Rafeal Frost Remix :: Juventa Remix :: Ferry's Original Extended Mix
Rafael Frost is a producer who has been around for a few years and in that time build up a very good reputation for himself. His production style is one very unique and it’s in full abundance for his take on ‘Pocket Damage’. His mix is very rough and tough with a break beat build up that takes influence from the original’s progressive but edgy lead melody. As you would expect from a Frost mix the sound in here is very crisp and edgy. This is a mix with plenty of impact and when the break hits, things get built up with a gorgeous harmonic string while feeding in the main riff, chopped up and played around with to great effect. It’s pocket damage but chopped up and given a distortive twist yet still driving through the melody that made the original so addictive.
While Rafael’s mix might not have had a shave for a few days it’s up to Juventa to inject his smooth uplifting trance razor to his mix. He’s a very young producer who has already had tracks impressing the established names within trance music, including Ferry Corsten. His remix takes on a similar pattern to the original in terms of structure but drives in plenty of percussion, pads and driving atmosphere into the mix. There is a delicate soft touch to the beat here with the leading riff working along the bass line. He’s injected other elements into the build up here with bright vibrant keys floated on top that fade in and out as the sounds wind down. When it all breaks it’s quite melodic but soon gathers pace and when that iconic swirling riff drops in it becomes a true beast of a track.
No re-release would be complete without the original thrown in so you can judge what all the fuss was about in the first place. It’s a track that still sounds good today, pumping from start to finish and home to a classic riff that’s become iconic to Ferry Corsten. He doesn’t make them like this anymore that’s for sure.
Conclusion:
One of Ferry's more well known classics compared to his rest but one which is very welcome to be remixed for 2010. Quite a diverse range between the two mixes, the rough and cut up tones of Rafael Frost or the uplifting builds of Juventa are what you have to choose from but for me there’s not a lot to choose between them. Great remixes.
