© Sean TyasSean Tyas will be dropping his signature tunage for Technoclub this Friday night in Frankfurt. We catch up with him as he prepares for one of Germany's most iconic club nights...

It's our pleasure to welcome back to the interview desk a Mr Sean Tyas after enjoying a very successful 2010. He's still residing over in Switzerland, although New York was the place he grew up in his younger years. He has been gathering admirers on the electronic dance music circuit for the past 8 years and is a regular on labels like Armada, Discover and Subculture. We all know him for delivering some of the most energetic trance you can find but he does like to shift his style into other genres to keep things fresh. This Friday he will descend upon Frankfurt’s world famous Technolcub for the second time in his career with Talla 2XLC being one of many leading artists supporting his music. His latest release ‘Banshee’ is a true bomb leaning on the tech direction and packs enough punch to test even the most robust speaker system. He’s dipping into the vocal game with a few of his tracks this year and has a brand new compilation coming out based on his radio show ‘Tytanium Sessions’, which we will drop you more info on very soon so keep a eye on the main page.

i:Vibes: Sean thanks for taking some time to talk to i:Vibes. 2010 was another successful year for you. What were your biggest musical highlights last year?

Sean: Musically, I’d say doing the Tiesto-Suburban Train & Gareth Emergy-Sanctuary remixes. This went over massively and I still play them when I play out. Then on the radio show front, I am proud to say I have switched Tytanium Sessions to weekly now, which has proved to be a ton of work, but really worth it: it’s now topping up at 19,000 official subscribers through iTunes alone. Amazing how the internet has connected us to the rest of the world.

i:Vibes: Did you have any musical and personal new year resolutions for 2011?

Sean: Vocal tracks, improve the show even more, album work.

i:Vibes: Soon you will be coming back to the Techno Club in Frankfurt to spin. What are your fondest memories from playing there?

Sean: I’ve only been there once so far, but last time I remember being there and my German speaking was REALLY poor. It still is but I think it’s a whole lot more functional now. So I look forward to hearing people joke a out my halb hoch- / halb Schweizer Deutsche dialect.

i:Vibes: What kind of DJ set can we expect from you? Will you be playing some of your old classics like Lift and Mirella?

Sean: Expect it to be high energy. At a night like Talla’s Technoclub, there is no excuse for playing ANYTHING less than FULL POWER. This is what that amazing night is all about.

i:Vibes: Years pass and Talla 2XLC continues to stick around. He has been a DJ since 30 years. Have you ever met a DJ that has as much passion for the music and promoting the genre?

Sean: Talla is proof that age means nothing in this business and in the scene. He’s got more energy than so many 19 year olds I know! It’s all about enthusiasm really, and he just has this deep love for & knowledge about the music.

i:Vibes: You produced the classic Heart to Heart a few years back. If you guys would make a 2011 mix, what would the track sound like?

Sean: I think these days if we were to make a new mix, it would simply just be a lot “shinier”. By that I mean we have still grown in style and technique over the last 2 years, and of course this leads to a better sounding track!

i:Vibes: You have been in the DJ Mag top 100 the last three years at 54, 46 and 45. In this time you continue to produce stellar tracks and play gigs around the world. What do you still have to do to get higher up the ranks? Possibly get a chart hit?

Sean: I don’t know, that Russian website video was interesting though!

i:Vibes: You are known as a trance producer, but have also dabbled with techno. Bit concerning your trance productions how has your sound developed since Lift and Mirella to Drop and One More night to your current tracks like Diverted?

Sean: I think things in the studio get a little bit too boring for me if I sit there and only make trance… melody, break, etc etc. I mean yes, this is my favourite style of music in the world, but hmmm…. Hey, if Christmas was everyday, it wouldn’t be special anymore.

i:Vibes: My first favourite track of yours was Lift and then it was Drop and then it was Melbourne. How has the feeling sunk in for you year after year that the music you produce touches so many people around the world? Did you think 7-8 years ago that you could reach the level that you are now?

Sean: NEVER. 7-8 years ago I was so new at this, and listening to anyone’s music was so magical and confusing. “How did he make this, how did he do that?” I would ask.. Well, now that I have learned so many of these answers to hundreds of questions, I find myself extremely proud.

i:Vibes: Melbourne is really a beautiful emotional track. What was your inspiration behind this track and was it a difficult track to produce? How hard was it finding that breathtaking melody?

Sean: It took forever, I think melodies should e simple “in the front, on the surface” and complex “behind the front”… meaning I like it when a melody seems really easy to remember, but behind the main simply melody it will be backed up by little detailed harmonies in the background. That was basically the whole mission behind Melbourne.

i:Vibes: Another banging and uplifting track is Tingle. What did you have to get right in the studio with this track to get the tingle feeling though you?

Sean: Hahaha, Tingle and Ivy, as you can probably tell, I was in a TERRIFIC mood while making. Ivy even has this break in it I call the “tongue kiss break”, designed to give guys an excuse to go for it.

i:Vibes: How much fun was it making a remix for the classic Suburban Train of Tiesto? You definitely have the Sean Tyas stamp on that remix. Did you ever get feedback from Tiesto on your mix?

Sean: Actually despite the fact that he did support it, I never did hear form him! Harrumph! :)

i:Vibes: You produced Diverted with Syat Naes. How was it working with him and how has the feedback been with this track?

Sean: Actually it is me, just with all the letters of my name mixed up. Feedback has been mixed as I expected. Of course people want me to ONLY make trance. But this is the reason for the name, producing under THAT name will mean it is something that is not my normal.

i:Vibes: Your current track Banshee is another epic track from you. Do you ever get ideas for tracks when you out doing the laundry or shopping or do you just get your ideas when you are in the studio

Sean: Music leads to more music. You get ideas for melodies all the time when in a shop and you hear a track playing on the radio (could even be POP), and you subliminally write your own melody over the bassline progression you can hear. Then I go quietly sing it into my iPhone to save for later.

i:Vibes: What other new releases can we await from you in 2011?

Sean: Vocals, a few remixes I have begun, and some interesting collaborations. Plus hopefully album at the end of the year if I get it done in time.

i:Vibes: What was your most unforgettable gig of 2010?

Sean: Easy one. Trance Energy Mainstage with Simon Patterson. Amazing.

i:Vibes: You will be performing at the A State Of Trance 500 in Den Bosch. How important has Armin’s show been for your career? Do you remember the first time that you ears heard this show?

Sean: I think it’s easily the biggest audience of ANY dance radio show, and as a result it is just a force that any serious trance producer needs to be part of. It’s the easiest and fastest way to have your new track reach millions of listeners…Armin’s been amazing with his level of support I have been given, and I hope he keeps supporting my stuff… It never gets old.

i:Vibes: Your Tytanium Episodes have really taken off and very popular. How much work does it take to make one of these? You don’t settle for anything but the best for your listeners.

Sean: The actual show takes about 4 hours, that includes the mix, the speaking over the mix. Then mixing, editing together the vocals and re-takes, and mastering. Then the various file format conversions and tying up the tracklists (for example, the official podcast through iTunes is split up into tracks that you can skip through tracks by name). This is all done by me so it takes some time, usually done on Monday, as it first airs on afterhours.fm, with it going into podcast format every Tuesday morning, as early as humanly possible.

But it really is an all week thing, because the hardest part is really finding enough new tracks each week that I actually want to present on the show!

i:Vibes: What do you enjoy the most about winter in Switzerland?

Sean: I LOVE the snow. This is how it’s supposed to look.

i:Vibes: Why would Keanu Reeves be the actor to play you in your life?

Sean: I guess he’s the only one who resembles me a little :) I can’t see Sean Connery pulling it off.

i:Vibes: What was your favourite track in 2010 and why?

Sean: PAFF – Duplicitous (Freakhouze Remix) - it’s not even trance! BUT it’s different. The original producer & remixer thought “outside the box” and ended up with a unique product they should be proud of.
