© Cosmic GateWe brought you news on their latest compilation 'Back To The Future' and told you how good it is, so, it's only right we get the Cosmic Gate in for a chat about it and a bit of a catch up...

They have been alive and kicking on the international dance scene for well over eleven years now as Cosmic Gate. The duo of Claus Terhoeven (Nic Chagall) and Stefan Bossems (DJ Bossi) has reinvented their style and sound over the past few years. They needed to as the evolution of today’s dance music is never ending with genre blends and new styles popping up on a weekly basis. Cosmic Gate have managed to stay fresh in the game but their old classic are still warmly remembered by fans around the world. They had the idea to pump new life into those early classic that put the Cosmic gate name on the dance map by asking some of the scenes current top producers to remix their old tracks. The end result is their latest compilation release ‘Back To the Future’ which spreads the new mixes over two discs with today’s sound morphed into yesterdays classics. We reviewed it and loved it, so the only thing to do was to go catch a few words with the Cosmic gate chaps for a word on the new release and a few other things.

i:Vibes: Cosmic Gate continues to release high class tracks, make unforgettable remixes and have added exposure with the solo project of Nic Chagall. What does Cosmic Gate still have to do/achieve to reached the coveted illustrious top ten company with the likes of Armin, Tiesto and PVD?

Cosmic Gate: What can we say here, we always do our best, put our heart and soul in the work that we do, this counts for both, productions and DJ gigs! if we ever will make it to the top 10, we will see, we have the feeling our support is getting more and more, and we promise we will not stop to deliver new music.

i:Vibes: 2011 is not even a month old, but what are the goals of Cosmic Gate this year with tracks and touring?

Cosmic Gate: We have a great tour ahead of us starting end of Feb., leading us to Asia, then 2 weeks Future Music Festival gigs in Australia, and after we go to the US for 2 weeks, ending the tour with the Ultra week end of march in Miami. We are also busy planning already for the European Summer Festival season, and started working on first new productions in the studio, we can say it will be a very busy year again, that we are looking forward to!

i:Vibes: ecently you released Back 2 The Future a double CD compilation of your old hits remixed. When you go back and listen to your own mixes of the seven hits, what memories come back and how has your music changed and developed in the last 12 years?

Cosmic Gate: When we started it was simply a different time, music in general was totally different, the studio equipment was light years from how it is today, so of course also our sound changed, it’s a natural thing, in 99 it was sure harder and faster then today’s more progressive style, but we think you always can hear our special handwriting, both in the early or in recent works.

i:Vibes: How difficult was it choosing the track list for Back 2 The Future? There are many illustrious acts who remixed your old hits. How did the track list process function? Did you let the word out that remixes were wanted and then you chose the best ones or did you contact the acts to make the remixes without a selection process?

Cosmic Gate: We made a bit of a selection process, as nearly everyone wanted to remix Exploration and Fire Wire, but all went great, we are more then happy with the Remixes, and very proud with the result of the album.

i:Vibes: Did you guys have a vision how you wanted the mix CD to sound like or were you just going to be surprised what the remixers would offer?

Cosmic Gate: It's always very exiting when a remix gets delivered, sometimes you get what you expect, sometimes it sounds different, but still is very good, but as said before, we were very lucky with the mixes, a big shout out to the Remixers once again!

i:Vibes: The first two tracks on CD 1 Exploration Of Space and Fire Wire are remixed by you. How difficult was it remixing these tracks after so many years? What was your goal in the studio in getting the sound that you created?

Cosmic Gate: Exploration actually went very fast in the studio, took us a day or so, with Fire Wire we found it harder to get it to the point, but now its one of the strongest tracks when we play it in our sets, studio work is not like cooking, you cant follow a certain recipe, you never before really know how u get a track working, which makes it so interesting and always exiting again to be in the studio!!!

i:Vibes: You made the Back 2 The Future CD a lot more diverse by letting a Robbie Rivera remix The Drums. What did you guys like most about his remix?

Cosmic Gate: .It was not only Robbies Remix, also the likes of Delicious, Spencer & Hill, Dirty Herz and Dimitri Vegas & Mike Like showed that our music works great in a house or electro context as well, and that was the goal behind these mixes. we did not only want Trance Remixes, it would have seemed bit boring to us, and all the House guys delivered big time, and our tracks were played a lot out of the trance/progressive scene like never before

i:Vibes: 19 wonderful classic Cosmic gate tracks remixed. What would you like the listeners to remember the most from this epic CD?

Cosmic Gate: We like the fact, that the album brings old and new fans together, we got a lot of response people telling us this, and we like it a lot!

i:Vibes: What was the most difficult thing you guys had to do in the studio to get the epic "I see you" theme to Avatar movie to be perfect sounding?

Cosmic Gate: It's always hard to transfer a ballade into a dance track, that’s why we only chose the short Vocal part, and more focused on the strings of the original! It was such a big honor to be asked to Remix this track, at the end we are the only official and confirmed Remix from Mr. Horner!

i:Vibes: What makes a night at the Electric Zoo in New York so unforgettable?

Cosmic Gate: The energy when we played was really fantastic, the crowd gave us such a warm and loud welcome, it seemed the set was building by itself, Electric Zoo really was one of the best gigs in 2010 for us!!!
