The first Mayday was held 1991 in the Weissensee hall in East Berlin. The MAYDAY cry for help at that time was meant to draw attention to the radio station DT 64, which was faced with closure. No one could ever have predicted that this would be the start of a new musical era and one of the most fascinating festivals...
Berlin, 20 years ago: the youth radio station “DT64” – one of the first ones to play “techno music” – is on the verge of folding. The label Low Spirit and the scene magazine Frontpage organise a solidarity party with “MAYDAY MAYDAY” as the cry for help. 14 December 1991 sees 6,000 partying euphorically to a new sound, and with it the “Mother of all Raves” is born. Little does anyone suspect what has been given life to on that night. The Mayday history is rave history.
MAYDAY is the driving force of the new youth subculture in the 90s. The scene starts to build up a network. Activists emerge from the visitors to Mayday. New labels, magazines, clubs and events spring up all over Germany and Europe. In many respects MAYDAY has already assumed a pioneering role. MAYDAY 1992 is the first time ever that an anthem and a compilation are dedicated to a rave. A Mayday booking ennobles any DJ’s biography. Mayday mottos echo the movement; the line-ups unite all house and techno trends. 1993, the Mayday premiere in Dortmund. 16,000 rave in the “Westfalenhalle” – the living proof that house and techno are not hype but the seminal youth subculture of these times. MAYDAY is finally the international rave summit and right up to this day the guiding beacon for others.
At the end of the 90s the rave media frenzy ebbs away. Techno is pronounced dead as often as MAYDAY has been held. But it stays in tune with the times, surviving all copies and celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2001. 2007 sees MAYDAY coming under the wing of I-Motion. A clearly defined floor concept takes full account of what has meanwhile become the vast stylistic variety of electronic music. Techno moves into the massive “Empire”, house into the clubby “Mixery-Casino”. The “Arena” remains the floor with the greatest musical spread. Hardcore and hardstyle return to MAYDAY in 2008 and rock the new “Factory”. The family is complete again – on what is now four floors. MAYDAY has never been so big, with 25,000 visitors setting a new record.
And now, 2011 – the 20th anniversary of MAYDAY, with a fifth floor popping out of the birthday cake and showcasing the tracks of those days and the stars of the first Mayday years, including Marusha, Tanith, Miss Djax, Hardsequencer, Ravers Nature and Ilsa Gold. Westbam and the Members of Mayday will also be saluting the old anthems one more time. It’s going to be a fantastic, golden and spectacular party. A night that will go down in the annals – just like 14 December 1991.
Forward Ever, Backward Never. Mayday.
