© TritonalWe have a word with the Tritonal guys as they prepare to unleash their debut artist album 'Piecing The Quiet' on Enhanced Recordings this May...

The rollercoaster keeps on gathering speed for trance duo Tritonal. They have only been around on the scene for just over three years but have made one hell of an impact in it. The two behind this trance movement are Chad Cisneros and Dave Reed who first met over this thing we called the Internet. Both being very like music minded the pair teamed up together to form Tritonal after Dave moved over 1500 miles to Texas to work more closely together in the studio. The mileage has certainly paid off with the guys knocking out tracks like ‘Daybreak’ ‘Walk With Me’ and ‘One More Day’ and having their tunes regularly inserted into some of the trance scene’s biggest DJ’ playlists. It’s time for the guys to take the next step with their career and this May will see their debut artist album to be released on there very own ‘Air Up There Recordings’ label on Enhanced Recordings. A label with which they have had fantastic support from and dare I say know a little thing or two about a good trance track. We last spoke to the guys in 2009 and with the new album coming ip there is no better time to catch up with them again.

i:Vibes: Thanks guys for taking some time. It has been 27 months since you last talked to i:Vibes.nu. How have your lives as Tritonal changed in the studio and on the decks?

Chadl: Wow! How time flies!! Well, I would say that since our last interview, the amount of consistent touring has to be the biggest change. Our profile has really seen a rise in Global Trance Community, and its all due to our wonderful fans! Playing festivals and clubs across the globe is a blast!

i:Vibes: How has the Tritonal sound progressed since Lights over Austin?

Dave: Haha it has been a WHILE since that track. We've come a long way for sure. Originally, we had a goal; we set out to discover what our 'style' of sound would be (and still are). Through doing this, of course, we had to experiment and play with other various types of the trance/dance genre. You can really hear how we've morphed since the production of this track. When we created "Lights Over Austin," we were in the niche of that prog sound. From there on out you can hear how everything overlapped into each track all the way over into Piercing Quiet.

i:Vibes: Lights Over Austin is one of those tracks that will remain timeless. Why is this track so unique?

Chad: Well, it was such a different sort of trance tune for the time. So many tracks on Anjunabeats at the time were pure uplifting, and it was really cool to see a progressive house influenced record on a full on uplifting record label. I think now that Dave and I have really found our sound, we can begin to appreciate how cool of a record that really was!

i:Vibes: In 2009, Tritonal was very busy with 13 releases. This was also the time where you started working and thinking about your debut album. How did 2009 and these releases shape the band in going in a particular direction for the debut album?

Dave: With the releases in mind as well as the timing, It wasn't too much of a difficult decision to start working on an artist album. It was definitely time. We didn't want to just be a duo artist that releases tracks online that may get some air time on radio shows and perhaps live shows. We want this to be a career with a nice portfolio underneath our belts. So with all this in mind, we decided to start the fire and let the world hear in one package the versatility of our music.

i:Vibes: What was the goal with the album Piercing the quiet? When you guys started work on this, did you have a certain direction you wanted to go or did a lot of the sound and style come as the studio work progressed?

Chad: We did have a few sit downs and really discuss the direction of the album. There were a few things we knew we wanted to do, and one was to really knock one out of the park with Cristina Soto. I think we did this with Still With Me & Everafter! We also wanted to do some chillout instrumental sort of stuff, which is where Poem of Angels came from. Besides this, we were being heavily influenced by tracks from guys like Stoneface & Terminal and really wanted to bring some fire on the clubbier tracks. Its a pretty decent balance of music we think.

i:Vibes: How did you guys share the studio duty? Who does what in the studio to make the tracks perfect?

Dave: This is one of our favorite questions to answer. Only because we both do so much to shape our music to satisfaction. Most of the time we equally share all the duties on the composing, arrangement and sound designing front of the music. Some days we split out our work individually and come together at the end to make the "Tritonal" changes, but most days we're sitting together in two chairs for 7 hours putting our thoughts in the sequencer! In Austin, we have two studios we work out of and are always working on new material together to keep the collaboration fire!

i:Vibes: Did you guys feel a lot of pressure making this debut album since the early success in your career?

Chad: No, we actually felt none at all. The album came quite organically, and was really a natural stem from the early success. We are really happy we were able to do the album on our own label, Air Up There Recordings because it allowed us to just focus on the music we envisioned as Tritonal, instead of having to "get approval" from a certain Label. It has really helped us grow and mature.

i:Vibes: Poem of Angels is a lovely intro track that could be used for a movie score with that happy ending. Do instrumental tracks have meaning for you from life situations or is that more for the vocal tracks?

Davel: You know it's funny you ask. To me personally, both vocal and instrumental tracks have depth in their meaning. For example, with Poem of Angels, the progression, the sounds and the organic nature of this track collectively boil down to a positive point of view. We like to show this in a lot of our progressions to give emotion and understanding of life's situations. Even our dark vocal tracks ;)

i:Vibes: Can’t keep it in" is a nice vocal track with Jeza. Is making a vocal track more of a challenge for you then is a instrumental track?

Chad: They are equally tough, but in different ways. A key to a great vocal track, is an amazing vocal! Well, this would be cake, if writing gold records were easy! lol Fortunately, we have very good and comfortable working relationships with our vocalists. It was a matter of really working hard on the main hook, and letting that be the soul of the tune.

i:Vibes: Ziziki is a peak time stormer. Does the name have an inner meaning that isn´t explained only from the name?

Dave: Haha! This one is fun name indeed! The title really says it all; it's fun, it's groovy, it's catchy, and ready for the dance floor!

i:Vibes: What was it like working with Meredith call on "Broken Down" How did this cooperation come about?

Chad: Its funny you ask, because it was quite a good experience! Normally when we've worked with Cristina, we'll start a piece and then she'll come in and we'll all begin sort of getting the vein of the track in order. Once we all agree on a direction, vibe and overall tone - she'll work through lyrics n melodies and we'll work it all out together. With Meredith, she insisted on staying in the studio day in and day out as one of the producers. At first it was a tad uncomfortable, but in the end it was a really cool and valuable experience. We all grew from it, became great friends and the track ended up drop dead gorgeous!

i:Vibes: "Retake" has a breathtaking break. Was this a track that was banged out in a short time or did this take longer to finish?

Dave: Oh my goodness! This track actually took us quite a while to think about. We actually had finished it earlier last year, but felt we needed to put it aside - at the time it was no where near where we had wanted it to be. Come the idea of our artist album we spent that extra time this track was in need of to get it to where it is now. So quite a story behind this one haha :P

i:Vibes: What do you guys think made Piercing Track such a unique track and has been loved so much?

Chad: THE HOOOOOOOOK! "Nah nah eeh-ahh eeeh-ahhyee-ahh" Its just one of those lines that is instantly memorable and forever stuck in the memory bank - massive hook!

i:Vibes: On Sometimes I wish, you worked with singer Bethany. How difficult is it working with so many different vocalists which really is nothing new in the trance genre.

Dave: Well, each vocalist has their own way of working. So I'd say the ONE major thing is re-explaining how WE work so we're both on the same page and can get whatever project we're collaborating on finished. Most of the time throughout the production of the album, we didn't really run into any situations ;)

i:Vibes: On Something New, you team up with Jenny R. How difficult was it general on this album reinventing yourselves especially on vocal tracks?

Chad: Well Something New is really something new for Tritonal! (no pun intended!) The overall sound design, darker feeling of the track and entire production is something we've never done before. People love it, and we didn't find it difficult at all. In fact, what is difficult to us is deciding which direction to stay with our sound! haha, sometimes we're so creative we're just all over the place, which can be good and bad!

i:Vibes: What was it like working together with rising star Christina Soto? You must of liked her since she is on 4 tracks. What do you like most about her voice?

Dave: We've loved Cristina from the start! She's been so passionate about the music and learning the new ideas we wanted to achieve together. I can speak for the both of us here when I say we absolutely love her range and the tonality of her voice. We feel it's unique and speaks for itself in any of our tracks.

i:Vibes: "I can breathe" is a very uplifting track with Jeza. How long did the production time take on this track and how was the studio work completing this track?

Chad: I Can Breathe took almost a month to finalize, mostly because Jessica was in Hong Kong at the time, and going back n forth online can be trying. We wrote 3 different chorus's bf finally nailing it on "as long as I can breathe......your still the one......." I was out on tour when she nailed it, and actually was so excited that I finished editing the vocal takes on my laptop in the hotel room in Canada! They were done by the time I got off the plane arriving home, and we immediately finished the tune. :)

i:Vibes: "Lifted" is another peak time track. This is the perfect combination between sound and vocals. What was the most difficult thing Tritonal had to do to get this track perfect?

Dave: We had a few runarounds with this track in particular. This project crashed on us more than a dozen times and at one point we had to rebuild our ideas! haha! The ideas behind the track are actually quite simple. I'd actually say that the musically tough part about getting this track "perfect" it would have to be where we were going to take the project in terms of the style. As we wanted each track on the album to be unique and different.

i:Vibes: Was the track finished first or the title Murakami? What is the story behind this track?

Chad: - Haha, funny story! One of Dave's really good friends, is a guy named Tommy Cresine. Well, story goes, that Dave used to know all of Tommy's passwords and one of them was Murakami! We finished the tune first, and Dave had this little scheme to surprise Tommy with the name and mess with him. Not quite sure how that went down, but Tommy - if your reading.....Gotcha!! o/

i:Vibes: What was it like working with Fischer who made the Last Time with Thrillseekers? Was there an interesting story to how this cooperation came about?

Tritonal: Yeah, we definitely learned a few new things on this collaboration for sure! First off, she has a wonderful voice and love how smooth it is, but when we worked together to get the vocals compiled, we had no idea we were going to be sent a "lala" guide, which is just simply a scratch track with a vocal melody - no lyrics. In the end it turned out to be a great idea because there were so many changes that we all wanted to make. No sense in singing all the lyrics first if you know what I mean :)

i:Vibes: You close the album with Christina Soto and tear jerker Still with me. This is a beautiful piece of music to close out the album. What was the most challenging thing getting this track perfect?

Chad: Oh baby, what a track! We worked so hard on so many elements with this, but the most involving was automating the Time Signature. The track is not in 4/4 to begin with, but 3/8. It then switches to 17/18 time if I remember right, and then again to another signature before arriving at 4/4. Our good friend and colleague Nick Sibicky aided us in this transition which really made the track so much more musical. To be honest, its one of my favorite tracks on the album!! This and Broken Down truly tug on the heartstrings!

i:Vibes: What do you guys want your fans to remember most from Piercing the Quiet?

Dave: We want them to remember the journey - the story. Every track has meaning to it and others can apply these to their lives whatever situation they may be in. Yes, we want this to be a career defining album, but also something that speaks to someone enough to put on repeat in their car, no matter how their day was.
