Ben Shaw, producer of the monster track with Adele Holness-"So Strong" and "sunscape"-which he did with excession (PROLOGUE EP), releases his next track- "celebrate". I grabbed a copy of this hot promo to see if it lived up to the Ben Shaw standard. After all-he had quite a reputation to uphold!.Did he pass the test? Find out >
A:Celebrate (ORIGINAL MIX) AA:Celebrate (DUB CHUNK MIX)
A SIDE: The track opens with a light bongo melody which kicks into life with a woosh. It gains momentum with some tasty electro effects which remind me of mana-psionic off sasha's global underground 009. The introduction of some nice vocoded words add another layer filling the track to a taste of whats to come. It breaks very early leaving the electro sounds to keep the vibe. On the return of the 4/4 the main male vocal is exposed to give an edge to the nice chunky effects. The vocal artist is unknown at this time as it is only a promo copy and unfortunately it does not say on the vinyl. The track is packed with breakdowns and it isnt long before the second is reached. Again an electro/retro effect is the basis but this time timely hand claps and lighter sounds leave you eagerly awaiting the return of the bassline. The track chuggs in familiar fashion to round off a nice mellow track.
AA SIDE: Again a melody introduction is prefered to a pounding 4/4. It starts in the same way as the A side, calculated high hats and a cheeky little sample makes you think the body of the track is iminent, only to leave you waiting that extra phase ot two. The second sample leads you to the bassline. Again fantastic elctro effects are used but they are more of a techno nature. The sounds blend really well with the high hats peaking in the background. The track does not really "kick off" but instead chuggs and gets busy with layers being introduced. The phenomenal male vocal comes into play again-its the kind of vocal thats people will know the words too after a couple of plays. Dub Chunk create a funky feel with similar synths ive heard in plump djs and breaks tracks-though it sounds cool in a progressive track. An atmospheric touch keeps the tracks interest till its close.
On the whole- this is a quality little number which is ideal to set the mood. Ben contrasts the female vocal of adele this time, with a male vocal-but again the vocal is the right one! The dub chunk remix is probably the better sounding of the two for me-as it has a more funky atmospheric feel, although i do like the whole effect created by the original. In answer to my proposed question at the start-of course he passes the test! who was i to even think he wouldnt. Grab one of these while you still can-will stay in my box for a while. Nice work Ben!
