The kings of tech house give us a snippet of whats to come with their 2nd album sampler. Is this pure genius from these fine producers? can we look forward to their album? get a taster of whats to come
>Love Story >Sleepy Language
Love Stroy This starts off with a typical menacing 4/4 and a killer vocal sample. The sample is repeated and is joined by another spoken sample "the following tone is a reference tone, recorded at our operated level"-with weird synths on the undercurrent. The track hits tribal feel with some nice drum/bongo loops but it maintains the bassline. As we enter the breakdown the track reminds me of the tv program "top gear". As we have seen in tracks from layo and bushwacka! before-they like to use piano samples, this does not fail as a piano combines with high hats and nice synths to give the track an ambient egde. It keeps the piano touch riding on the bassline to provide the bulk of the mid section. A third vocal comes in-this one a little more soulful, but it sounds good with the piano. An ever increasing build gives the track an upbeat feel. It rounds off with some reverbed effects and the distorted third vocal.
Sleepy Language This track starts with a total detroit feel. Slow breakbeat and a menacing bassline are the main layers to this track. A nice saxaphone touch echoes with lightly flowing synths to get a nice little vibe going. A mini break is used to interupt the flow- only to introduce a softer sound to contrast the track. Again they stick with some vocal effects. The words are repeated with the breaks pushing it along-the whole feel of the track increases in a minimal way. Samples from "the egyptian" are used to make it known that this is layo and bushwacka! The track is fairly short in length and the early detroit sounding melody rounds off a cool chilled out track.
This is a wicked album sampler! in many ways it is the same as cass + slides album sampler (check previous reviews). It has two tracks which contrast greatly. I love the slow breaks track- i feel it shows layo and bushwacka!'s genius in producing. It is something that i certainly didnt expect from them. "Love story" on the other hand i heard when they played it at Homelands and it sounded great! They use samples of instruments i dont usually like-but make it sound as though they belong there! Top notch sampler...album will be well worth the wait!
