© NifraWhen you the other half of Marcus Schossow you might take a liking to this thing we call electronic dance music. As she prepares to enter the Technoclub this week we have a words with female DJ & producer Nlfra...

The very famous Technoclub is back in full swing this week with Talla 2XlC inviting Marcus Schossow to play along side him to entertain the clubbers in Frankfurt. Joining them is a very talented upcoming female DJ and producer Nifra, who as it goes is the current other half of Marcus. She has been inspired by the progressive style of trance and we could not let her pass by without getting a few words and background info on a name you might not have come across yet. Well, without any delay let us introduce you to Nifra...

i:Vibes: Thanks Nifra for taking some time to talk to ivibes.nu. You will be giving your debut in the Technoclub in Frankfurt on June 4th. How excited are you about playing there? Is this your first time in Germany djing?

Nifra: Hey guys, Thank you for having me! I’m totally excited as it’s going to be my debut performance! Needs to be said that Germany is one of my favourite countries in the world so double the excitement ;)

i:Vibes: What do you know about the legendary Technoclub that has been around since 1984?

Nifra: I’ve heard the name a lot; saw some commercials and also the Technoclub compilations in record stores in Germany.

i:Vibes: You are only 23 and still very young, but when did you hear of the name Talla 2XLC for the first time?

Nifra: I remember I used to see his video clips numerous times at the German TV program Viva. Especially when I was 13 & 14 I used to collect “Club rotation” compilations, so his name was pretty known to me.

i:Vibes: How would a Talla 2XLC/Nifra production sound like?

Nifra: Well, first of all we would have to sit in the studio to find out ;)

i:Vibes: What kind of DJ set can we await from you in the Technoclub?

Nifra: Its going to be very fresh and full of newest tracks from all subgenres of Trance and of course a little bit of Trouse.

i:Vibes: How would you describe the Nifra DJ sound and Nifra producing sound?

Nifra: Big room!

i:Vibes: What has been your most unforgettable DJ set so far in your young career?

Nifra: I think it was when I warmed up for Tiesto in my home country. I was opening the event and the club was literally packed at 9pm when I started to play. I’ve never seen anything like that before and as usually Bee free festival in Slovakia where I play at the Trance stage each year for circa 5-6k people.

i:Vibes: Does your artist name Nifra have any special meaning? Why did you name yourself Nifra?

Nifra: Actually it’s not a big secret. If you take 2 letters of my first name “Nikoleta” and 3 of my last name “Frajkor” u will get Nifra ☺ I was thinking about my artist name for a long time and I thought that this combination didn’t sound bad at all. I have been using it since the very beginning.

i:Vibes: You are from Slovakia. What was your childhood like?

Nifra: I have been a hardcore student at both grammar school and later gymnasium. Me and my female friends used to have a girl band, when we were like 8 . We used to sing, dance and perform

i:Vibes: Who were your early musical inspirations?

Nifra: In fact the first dance music artists I listened to were almost all German and where I come from getting this kind of music was really hard. So I remember each week waiting for Club rotation on Viva. I looked up to ATB a lot and then to Tiesto. His “In my memory” album, is definitely one of my favorites and brings me indeed a lot of memories.

i:Vibes: What was the deciding moment where you knew that you wanted to be involved with electronic dance music?

Nifra: I was in southern Germany for a holiday because my aunt lives. I remember that I was watching RTL2 and there was a live video stream from Love Parade 2001. I was shocked how big it was and what kind of music they played. I was blown away! Since then I knew I wanted to do this so badly! Germany became my favourite summer destination and later in 2006 I visited for the first time Street Parade in Zurich, which was on my wish list for good 5 years.

i:Vibes: What have been the biggest challenges as a woman Djane making a name in the dance scene? I guess it helps a bit when your boyfriend is Marcus Schossow?

Nifra: Well, some people think that behind the name Nifra is a guy, but now seriously. I don’t think that being Marcus’s girlfriend helps as many might suppose. I started with djing and music long time before I met him. Obviously I don’t introduce myself as “the Schossow’s girlfriend” but as Nifra and it doesn’t really matter who is your friend or boyfriend, if your music is not good enough.

i:Vibes: What are the biggest advantages and disadvantages of being a female Dj?

Nifra: Sometimes I think there are not any advantages especially when you see comments from people accusing you of not making your music. Because there is more female DJ’s than producers, they try to become very famous by using ghost producers. And since that happened so many times people automatically think each of us is doing the same shit. People forget that among them could be some real artists who actually do their thing really well and my full respect goes to these girls that have chosen the harder way and not the easier one!

i:Vibes: Why did you go from a progressive sound to the Nu-trance sound in 2008?

Nifra: Nu – trance came like a fresh wave of trance and I’m kind of very open minded person and I do not listen to just one genre so I liked how trance started to develop and got influenced by other genres. And Nu – trance consists of all those elements I like.

i:Vibes: You produced "Different Ways with Progresia in 2010. How has your sound developed since then?

Nifra: I always try to do something new in the studio, that’s why ‘m not the fastest producer and don’t release 20 tracks in one year. My sound develops all the time although it was hard to say goodbye to my beloved super saw basslines (lol).

i:Vibes: How do you work in the studio? Is there a certain way how you go about making a track? Is Marcus Schossow your best teacher in the studio?

Nifra: There is not really a special way of how I work. I work when I have an inspiration. Since Marcus is away a lot I rather spend time in the studio when he is traveling. When he is home then it’s a bit fighting, but I usually let him work because as I said he travels a lot. Marcus taught me so much but if you listen to my stuff it doesn’t really sound similar. I went to piano classes and I do read a lot of music related books. My dad saw me reading one in the middle of summer and asked me if I was normal. Well, I’m a little book worm, what can I do…

i:Vibes: What releases can we expect from you in 2011?

Nifra: My remix for Yep & Lang ft Manon Polare – Nevertheless is scheduled for July on Enhanced music and my track called “Strangers” will be out the 15th of august on Soundpiercing – sublabel of Armada.

i:Vibes: What makes your radio show be Progressed so unique and different from all the other shows?

Nifra: My show is a monthly show, so I choose the tracks really carefully. Marcus actually laughs sometimes of how much time I spend on 1 hour mix. Lately I started to get tired of copy pasted parts in some tunes so I started to edit almost each track if possible. I always try to key mix and build up the mix! I think If ever do a mix CD I would literally spend a LOT of time to fix all the details how I exactly want because I really do enjoy it. For example if you ever heard my End of year countdown mix from 2010 & 2009 you know what I’m talking about.

i:Vibes: With what producer would you love to be locked away in the studio for 24 hours?

Nifra: There are a lot of great producers. I’ve said it many times that I admire Rex Mundi’ stuff. I love that he puts so much soul in his tracks. Or Nic Chagall!

i:Vibes: What is your overall impression of the German trance scene? What artists do you respect and like the most?

Nifra: You have so many amazing artists like Wippenberg, (respect for his electro trance sound he came with in 2007) Cosmic gate (minimalistic beats but huge sound & deep sawleads- simply love it), Stoneface & Terminal, Kyau & Albert, Ronski Speed, Jorn van Deynhoven. As I said I’m huge fan of Nic Chagall sound aswell! But I feel like there is a lack of new upcoming producers

i:Vibes: What are your current five favorite tracks?

Nifra: Evol waves – Everything in its right place
Arty & Mat Zo - Rebound
Above & Beyond ft Richard Bedford – Sun & moon (Marcus Schossow remix)
Markus Schulz vs Jochen Miller - Rotunda
Orjan Nilsen – Between the rays

i:Vibes: What are your five all-time favorite tracks?

Nifra: It would definitely be some of the first progressive trance tracks which made me spin progressive trance 5 years ago.

Ridgewalkers ft El - Find (Andy Moor remix)
Progresia – The shelter
Tilt – The world doesn’t know (Ozgur can remix)
Perry O Niel – Bass society
James Holden ft Julie Thompson – Nothing (93 returning mix)

Those were just genius tracks! I could continue though…

i:Vibes: What are your hobbies?

Nifra: At the moment there is not much time for hobbies. I’m studying at university and right now I’m in the middle of exams. When I get back to Sweden first thing I’m going do is to sit in the studio and not leave it till I’m finished with some stuff ☺ Besides I’m taking an intensive “5 day a week” Swedish course. And when I’m not doing any of it I’m changing to a girly girl who just loves makeup & fashion.

i:Vibes: If you were to play your last ever DJ set, with what track would you end your set?

Nifra: I feel like I have just started, I’m just 23 and not planning to end in any way. So just thinking about this gives me a bad feeling.
