If its uplifting emotional trance music your after then Ferry Tayle's distinctive style is just the job. We manage to catch a few words with the euphoric master before he heads over to Germany for a big night at the legendary Technoclub...
When you think of where the majority of trance artists reside in the world France is not a country at the top of the list. It’s not known for its trance scene and on the artist front names are a little thin on a ground. One export that is setting the scene on fire with his sizzling releases over the past few years is Ferry Tayle. Having been signed to Enhanced Recordings he’s been knocking out one euphoric masterpiece after the other. His latest single to hit the scene is a melodic vocal beauty with Hannah Ray called ‘Memory of Me’. If you’re attending this week’s Technloclub night in Frankfurt, Germany hosted by the legendary Talla 2XLC then you may well be treated to this as Ferry Talye has been invited over to play for the night. Ahead of his appearance this Saturday evening we caught a few words with man himself.
i:Vibes: Ferry thanks for taking some time to talk to ivibes. Strassburg is not far away from Frankfurt about 2 hours. Has the summer been nicer in Strassburg this year than in Frankfurt?
Ferry: Yes it is ! But it could be better, to much clouds & rain for a real summer. But when it was hot outside, it was very very hot!
i:Vibes: What has been your most positive trance experience in the summer of 2011?
Ferry: It was definitely & without doubt the Luminosity Beach Festival. It's my favourite Beach Festival and the organizers are one of the best I know around ! Everything are magic there : crowd, place, promoters, people ! I was there during the 2 days. I met so much great people! Can't wait to be back there again!
i:Vibes: You will be playing in the Technoclub in September. How excited are you coming back to the Technoclub again?
Ferry: I'm very excited. Technoclub is a legendary brand mark. I felt already so honoured to play there few years ago and now to be back again, I feel even more honoured! Playing alongside Talla is something unique. He was one of the DJ who inspired a lot when I discovered trance!
i:Vibes: When was the first time that you heard about the legendary Technoclub? What does the Technoclub mean to the EDM fans in France?
Ferry: When I was young, one of my friend gave me a technoclub compilation. It was the first time I heard about it. After I saw many events with so great line up. I never expected to play there one day. In France, Technoclub is mainly known on the other side of the Rhein.. unfortunately not everywhere in France.
i:Vibes: Talla 2XLC has been around for more than 30 years. Do you remember the first time that you heard the name Talla 2XLC?
Ferry: As I said before, when I receive for the first time a compilation mixed by him. It was a big blast from me. Pure trance !!! After I saw him on some German TVs and it was so great to watch him playing with some much passion
i:Vibes: What is your favourite Talla 2XLC track?
Ferry: World In My Eyes ! I totally felt in love with this track when it was released ! I still have the maxi CD at home
i:Vibes: What would a Talla 2XLC/Ferry Tayle track sound like in 2011 if you guys were to be locked in the studio for 24 hours?
Ferry: Well, as we're on the same frequencies, it will sound like a pure emotional track with lot of energy like only him knows how to do it ! But to know a bit Talla, I think together locked in a studio, we will have a lot of fun more than anything else. I have a big respect for him.
i:Vibes: Is Ferry Tayle your real name or an artist name. One thinks about the word fairy tale when you hear it?
Ferry: Ferry Tayle is my artist name only. I took it from Fairy Tale...as it was like this I was described by people & other djs when I started to play trance. My way to play is like telling a fairy tale. Beside this, as a HUGE fan of Ferry Corsten, I decided to rework Fairy Tale as Ferry Tayle, without knowing one day, I will reach the level I have today
i:Vibes: What can we await from your DJ set in the Technoclub? Could we hear your Everest or Cape Town classics in your set?
Ferry: I never know in advance what i will play. But it could be a possibility, but more Capetown than Everest. It's a lonnnnnnnng time we didn't do something together. Only Stephan R, is the only rescue of the Everest's story. We had some trouble in the past with a well known DJ, that was a reason of this split.
i:Vibes: You discovered jazz at an early age and was inspired by the music of Jean-Michel Jarre's. What is it with his music that has always stuck with you?
Ferry: Well, jazz brought me the way to understand & feel the pure emotion, because for me, there is no better style than this one for feeling the real emotion, the deepest one. After that, I felt in love with the creativity you can have with the electronic music. The only limit, it’s yourself
i:Vibes: You have also been influenced by Chicane. What Chicane song has inspired you the most and why?
Ferry: Chicane has always the thing that bring emotion & feelings, with a biggest skill behind. Every time I listen to track from them, I find something new…My favourite song ever from them is Saltwater…shivers every time.
i:Vibes: As an 18 year old you were able to share the decks in 2000 with well known acts like U-96, Darude or David Guetta at the le Colysee club. What were you able to take with you as a DJ from these times that has stayed with you until today as a DJ?
Ferry: I was friend with one of the resident DJ in this biggest club near my city. I was there every Friday & Saturday, speaking with him, talking about music and for sure, dreaming one day to spin some vinyls in front of a huge crowd (The club capacity is around 3000 people). One night, David Guetta (he was not known like today) was planned…and the hour before him, my friend gave me this opportunity. I was trembling as hell but I succeed to do my first step behind the desks in a club just before David Guetta and he was very, very friendly with me. Big moment. With the other DJs, I had the chance to participate at their sound check and speak music. Was very nice!
i:Vibes: When you listen to an old remix from your Thinking of you from the Ohm Boys, how has your music production developed since then?
Ferry: It’s night and day. At this time, we didn’t have a lot of skills! We spent 6 month for doing it. We discovered at this time our first hardware synth, specially the Access Virus…We were crazy about using it in this remix. It was a great experience and see our name on vinyl was magic!
Now my sound has evolved a lot, as trance in general! so it’s hard to compare the past Trance and the nowadays trance ! It’s close to be totally different, on every point and I could say unfortunately!
i:Vibes: Oree by Everest was one of your first own productions which shared a nice remix by Alex Morph in 2005. This track became very successful was released on many well known complilations like Sensation White & Technoclub Next Vol 2. Did you eve r think after you produced it that it would become such a smash hit?
Ferry: You never know when you produce, that your track will become one day a smash it! Even now, when I produce, I don’t think that this track or this track will be smash it! I was so happy to see Oree on Sensation White & Technoclubs one…wow, what a feeling to see your name on different record shop all over Europe! Unbelievable!
i:Vibes: You produced Cape Town with Airwave and many unforgetable tracks. What made the combination of Ferry Tayle/Airwave so successful in the studio. What did he/you bring to the table in this project?
Ferry: Well, when I met Airwave and when he offered me the possibility to become the new co producer of Capetown, he told me…”I left a bit the trance scene at the moment, so I will bring you my skills and you will bring me your trance feeling”. After, the only things…it’s the magic of this meeting, I can’t explain ! We didn’t chat a lot when we produced, it was eyes to eyes, not a lot of word…the follow of this story, you know it! I think with Capetown, we came with the old cape town spirit and kind of new sound!
i:Vibes: You produced the Prestige last year and got a beautiful Temple One remix. Can Temple One become on of trances next big time producers? He keeps banging out amazing tracks time in and time out?
Ferry: Joe (Temple One) is here a years and he is definitely one of the best trance producer around, real trance. He always bring quality in his work. The only thing that can miss, is to do THE smash it that a lot of people will remember for age…But I’m sure it will come ! It’s definitely someone you can count on!
i:Vibes: You recently released Memory of me featuring the talented Hannah Ray on vocals. How has the feedback been on this track?
Ferry: Amazing so far, we reach the TOP 20 Beatport chart after only 3 days out. I’m sure Hannah & me can do better but for our first track together, it’s already a good things with what happen around Memory Of Me. But we’re working on some other tracks too!
i:Vibes: Was memory of me a difficult track to produce or did you bang it out quickly? What was most difficult on this track getting it right in the studio?
Ferry: This track could turn into a nightmare…I worked on it over more than 1 year, with 1000000 different versions before finding THE one that could fit. It’s my first vocal track, so I wanted something good and specially, a good track after L’Acrobat, Trapeze and The Prestige! It’s hard to keep some good tune always!
i:Vibes: Your remix for Suncatcher, First day has very much emotion, melody and atmosphere. What is the absolute most important thing that a Ferry Tayle track always needs to have?
Ferry: Emotion and a story! All my track must tell something, else I can’t produce when I don’t have something to tell, even if when I remix. But the original is already so cool, that he was hard to remix!
i:Vibes: You have been working on a new track with a beautiful atmosphere and climax that was featured on Enhanced Sessions 98. How is the work coming on with this track. What has been your inspiration to this breathtaking sounds?
Ferry: Well, I love mystery atmosphere with a lot of feelings and as I said before, something to tell. I try to put some kind of atmosphere when people can escape in it! I think people starting to call me The Wizard, maybe because of this. It’s funny, but I don’t want to disappoint people!
i:Vibes: The trance scene is very limited in Germany as is it is in France. Is it the techno and House scene in France that limits the trance scene to grow?
Ferry: Well, in France it’s worst than Germany…Trance is close to 0 ! A lot of French even don’t know that I’m French !!! and I have never some gigs here ! House is the main stream in France definitely thanks to David Guetta, Bob Sinclar, Martin Solveig. It’s hard for the trance scene to grow up, but it’s a good things for the French people because they start to open their eyes about the DJing scene & the electronic scene in general. Before David Guetta, French people always had a bad opinion about electronic music, even with monster like Daft Punk or Jean Michel Jarre !
i:Vibes: With what artist would you like to be locked away in the studio for 24 hours?
Ferry: Chicane, Jean Michel Jarre, Sean Tyas I think! Wish I could do this one day. Love all those artists
i:Vibes: What are your 5 all-time favourite tracks?
Ferry: Oceanlab – Satellite Rank 1 – Airwave Airwave – People Just Don’t Care DuMonde – Never Look Back Chicane – Saltwater
i:Vibes: What are your hobbies?
Ferry: Sports when I have time, video games, spending time with my family & friends, because between my job & music, it’s hard to manage everything!
i:Vibes: What has been your most crazy DJ experience ever?
Ferry: The first Exchange Of Sound Festival in Poland ! When we arrived there, we heard about a lot of trouble around the festival, because of neighbour who complained about noise…and by seeing at the beginning few people coming. We thought about an epic failed and finally it became one of the best night I had in 2010 ! Weird start but amazing finished!
i:Vibes: If you played your last ever DJ set tomorrow, with what track would you end your last DJ set with?
Ferry: Mmm…hard question, but very, very interesting one ! I will surely finish with Rank 1 – Airwave or mainly Vol De Nuit, my first single under Ferry Tayle. I think it’s the best way to close my DJ Career ! But don’t worry if you listen to me playing these tracks at the end…it’s not the final act!
